I agree with the above. I have overwintered them before. The mites are a struggle. I find they don't make a very satisfactory houseplant, but if you want to save them to put outside over the summer, it can be worth the effort. Another option is to keep it in a cool (but above freezing), dim place, like a basement, with very minimal watering. It will drop some leaves, look pretty yucky, and basically go dormant, but the mites are unlikely to become an issue. Then in the spring, cut it back to a few inches above the soil, put it in a warm sunny spot, and let it regrow.

Can finally reply to the original question :) Just brought our Mandevilla plants out from the crawlspace. 2 of them were the ones Lynnencfan mentioned above (3 years ago- wow!), and the 3rd one was from a tip cutting I took in Nov, 2008 before we stored them for the winter. The cutting in question was from new green growth, and about 8" long. I rooted it in water for about 2 months, then potted it up (4" pot) and kept it in a South window during the winter. Last spring, it got repotted into a 10" pot with a 3' tomato cage for support. The vine itself probably grew about 10 total feet, but I kept it wrapped around the cage. Did not flower last year. I didn't cut that one back but put pot and cage under the house for storage. Just brought it back out this morning, and there's an abundance of nodes just waiting to pop out with new growth! So yes, they can be propagated from cuttings. Hopefully, we'll get some blooms this year. I'll report back in this thread again on the plants' status this summer. In the meantime, we also had 2 viable seedpods from the older Mandevilla last fall, and I'm getting ready to pull the seeds and sew them today. Will also report back on their status later in the season.

First, do you mean hibiscus?? Mandavillas are usually vines. If it's a tropical hibiscus, here's a site that has lots of great info for you. Now that I think about it, mandavillas are about as tender as tropical hibiscus and I know people have overwintered both in garages. Good luck! Lady, don't cut it - just let it grow. The most important thing is to let it adjust to the light difference GRADUALLY so it doesn't burn and thus die back. I wouldn't change the pot just now - let it get adjusted to the outdoors, water it well, then buy a pot just FOUR INCHES bigger in diameter. W hen you take it out of the pot it's in now, DON'T disturb the root ball - plant it gently, and it will not even realize it's been repotted. Water it well with some vitamin B water, and it will be happy!
