I live in Naples, FL, too, and have for the last 12 years, just like the OP. I used to live in VA where everything grew. But here in the tropics, with a very wet and very dry season, and no winter, it's difficult to grow anything that's not native or adapted to this sort of environment in their own countries. Some roses do grow, but they're prone to black spot and other fungal diseases because of the humidity. Most of my neighbors have pulled them out, and I don't see them even in the wonderful Naples Botanical Garden. If I did try one, it would be the rambler Peggy Martin, which survived Hurricane Katrina--though it's only rated for zones 4-9, and Naples is zone 10a. I've tried all sorts of flowering plants in my garden, which have survived several small hurricanes and two big ones--Irma and Ian. The flower that did best was crossandra. Vinca does well generally, but can't survive hurricanes. Plumeria lived, but loses its leaves in winter, so not attractive then. Better to growing shrubs with colorful leaves, like crotons or bromeliads, or bulbs like caladiums (which will go dormant in the winter). A lot of the survivors lose some of their leaves right before hurricane season. but come back to life quickly in the spring.

Thank you everyone for your comments. I've bought Jude the Obscure as a non-climbing variety to go with the rest of my English roses. I already have Graham Thomas, planted it yesterday with room to expand and grow big. My Golden Celebration is in it's second year, has many buds, they are not open yet, I'm so much looking forward to it. I've bought both New Dawn and Eden, they are beautiful and I couldnÂt help it. Since New Dawn seems to be a bigger plant it'll go onto the wraparound trellis. Eden will go behind the English roses, I'll have to come up with some kind of a separate trellis for it. I'll try to take some pictures tomorrow and post them. Thanks again, your comments were very helpful.

I grew it sw of Houston. Very pretty blooms & they are abundant, over a long season. But. Almost everyone I know who has planted it regrets doing so, unless they stuck it way in a back pasture or used it specifically to cover an old shed or dead tree. Extremely exuberant, and the canes are viciously thorned. I mean REALLY vicious. Like the McCartney rose that has invaded pastures in the milder winter areas of TX. That's it's parent, after all, & it is a bracteata child, for sure. Will form enormous mounds of heavy canes like braided bobwire. Even young canes are almost untouchable they're so spiny. Very pretty in a huge space set aside for it. A monster on a normal rose arbor, I'd think.

It’s weird, I have one bush that really struggles, and the same bush that’s like 10’ away doing fairly well for the location (roadside)..the one that’s doing bad I blame on a maple tree that used to be right next to it..I just cut that tree down last year (hated the thing anyway) and the bush is doing a little better...not tremendously better..but I’ll know more after this growing season...this is also the bush that had issues with mildew (the healthy one never has) but again prior to maple tree being cut down...after tree gone, no mildew..it’s weird.
