Well of course you need to provide them with plenty of good air circulation, and try to avoid overhead watering, but the best success I have, and I'm growing roses in a fairly humid area, is the good old lime-suphur spray in June /July after pruning away all the previous season's growth, ie pour it over the whole plant as well as all the surrounding soil but make sure all leaf has been removed otherwise it will kill them off. I find in doing this each year I kill off the over-wintering ground spores of blackspot and during the growing season I hardly ever have to use a fungicide. If the infestation proceeds to ugliness though during the flowering /growing time I find Yates 'same as Labacid' systemic fungicide the best.

Sorry, not that Yates product for blackspot, I'm getting old and confused, I meant Triforene. I usually mix the triforene with the other, which is an insect apray, and treat both blackspot and what aphids are about. But these days i seem to only need the mixture once or twice through the growing/ flowering season. As for powders, I think they are a bit of a waste of time as it is difficult to cover all the plant. I really can't help on your 'burning' bud problem unless you have aphids are so bad they are sucking all the sap from them! Are you giving them plenty of water during the real dry periods?

I think they got a lot of water these two weeks because of rain. Other than that I water three times a week but I think I am doing something wrong because before that all my leaves were yellow. I cut off the leaves and cleaned the beds. We had two weeks of rain after that so I could not put any more poison because here it rained daily. Now these two weeks I had the outbreak of BS and the burning buds. Think it can be the rain? I am dreading that it could be Butrytis....if it is...I might have to say goodbye to my beautiful Crysler Imperial and Sir Don Bradman. I am crossing my fingers that it is not.... Hey thanks for your help. I am treating with triforine. I don't hink I have aphids though but something is eating my leaves aswell...Not very easy the life of a rose grower with that many anemies to combat on the rose garden hey??

This autumn I've found that Pest Oil, apart from its advertised use against mites and other insects, works wonders on mildew and black spot too. It coats and then smothers the fungus completely.

It's just wonderful stuff. Spray it when there's a few days of no rain in the forecast.

Hunty, you're too flattering. It might do nothing for you. I still recommend milk sprays for fungus but I suspect Pest Oil/Neem Oil etc work the same way - smothering. Try to coat all leaf surfaces and undersurfaces if you can.

I had big problems with spider mites this year and the Pest Oil was the only solution that had a lasting effect.

And Hunty, the pest oil that Daniel advises will not harm the life in your garden - it is great solution.
