Hi Bonnie, I'd love a rhizome of (in this order if have left): 'Colour Tart' 'Olympic Challenge' 'Seneca Snowdrift' 'Stepping Out' You may want some daylilies in TN -- in NC we have problems with erosion. Regardless of erosion due to last 2 yrs drought daylilies are drought tolerant once established. Currently our temps in hi 90's to 101 w/heat index, this does not stop daylilies from producing lovely blooms when mulched. I use daylilies on hills since their roots are deep, their foliage crowds out weeds, looks nice most of yr, very low maintenance, come in wide range varieties/colors -- I can add them to your Magnolia 'Royal Star' when you want them -- by then more of my named daylilies will have propagated so I can offer you some very pretty ones. 'Gentle Shepherd' is white, needs to propagate though, would be late fall before could send. I also have (both hardy in TN, pretty on trellis, attract butterflies): Passiflora 'Amethyst', cutting grown Passiflora caerulea - Blue Crown Passion Flower, cutting grown And a 1.5 yr old Chaste tree from 'Shoal Creek' - Vitex agnus-castus, also attracts butterflies, is a fast growing, gorgeous small tree in our zone, also drought tolerant once established. Just came across this thread and realized I hadn't put my 2 bits in. Strange, since I have well over 15o irises...... :) I had a long chat with a breeder and grower today about the past winter and spring and what it has done to my irises. I lost a few that were at least 6 years old this year! And while I will agree that there are definitely irises that just don't handle the winters we get in Edmonton, I find the greatest challenge is where they are planted. I have irises that didn't bloom for years until I moved them to somewhere they liked. Trial and error has been my best teacher since planting my first 10 irises 10 years ago. No iris borers that I have yet to see, which I am grateful for, and basically four things I have found irises are picky about. 1) They don't like wet feet, 2) They LOVE the sun, 3) They must have their rhizomes slightly above the soil level towards the sun if possible, 4) They like a warm blanket of leaves or mulch in the winter. :) Since I am such a diehard iris lover, I have spent a small fortune on plants over the last 10 years. I have lost many and still have some that have been here all of those 10 years. Some years some don't bloom for me for some reason so I usually move them. Was just saying today that I have given IB Ming five chances......finally planted her out front and she has bloomed her pretty little head off for 2 years now and increased exponentially! Same with Buckskin Babe, Happenstance, and Dusky Challenger! And so it is with my experience with irises, The Goddess of the Rainbow. Once she takes hold of your heart and you treat her like a lady, there are no words to describe her beauty. Even if she only blooms for a short period, her elegant foliage stays green and adds to the charm of my Garden of Angels all season. :) Ginny PS I also use alfalfa pellets as a soil additive. :)

esofva, I'm a member of HIPs and participated in the sale this year for the first time. I think it depends on how set you are on certain cultivars as to how pleased you'd be with the members sale. The rhizomes were $5.50 each, very reasonable. A good portion of what I received were nice medium size and healthy. Probably 80% of my order was substituted as some donors had to drop out early for various legitimate reasons (health, family emergency, etc). I ordered late though so in a first come/first serve situation that may have played a part in my getting so many substitution. Others on the HIPS forum noted that the number of substitutions I had was unusual and it is possible my order was accidentally swapped with someone elses. Some of those I actually ordered that made it into my shipment were so very small, honestly smaller than a 1st yr seedling. But I was given several bonus cultivars with them to make up for small size. Overall I like surprises and I was so thrilled to get some of the oldies that I am pleased with my order. Quite a few probably won't bloom next year but they all have survived. It was not the quality of order that I would have expected from a commercial source but the price was also quite reasonable and it supports a good cause. Probably better than the sale is the chance to trade with others on the exchange forum for members. Of course that depends on what you have collected to offer in trades. I don't have a lot of room and am still pretty new to this so don't have a lot of named oldies to offer yet. In a few years that will have changed. There are commercial sources for oldies as mentioned above. Several iris vendors sell a few old cultivars and a few actually specialize in them.
