Sick cycad help

Hi - anyone know much about cycads - Cycas thourasii they are all looking a bit iffy. The new growth seems to be shiveling is it just lack of water (I do have them in pretty much full sun but they have been fine for the last 2 years - and I epected them to be hardier now than when first planted).

Any help appreciated.

It could be a water thing, but just check the leaves really closely (especially underneath) for scale.

Keep an eye on them ,there is a butterfly/caterpillar(i cant remember the name sorry)that has been affecting these cycads also revoluta ,in QLD over the last few years,
The best way of dealing if things to get too bad is to use carbaryl or maverick and cut the affected fronds off,i have heard though it is another one of those introduced problems like Frangipani rust that is here to stay.

Just a thought Jan.....Not enough Water...Or perhaps too much fertilizer. Never fertilize on dry soil it will lead to plant burn. Was the leaves new ones or old I see the outer ones are still green. Is it a new plant?? never feed at transplanting time wait about six weeks till transplant shock has passed. Only fertilize three times a year...Hope some of this helped...Cheers..MM.

It could be a 'scale insect' problem, common to cycads. Check the 'leaves' closely for the raised scale coverings, most likely on the lower leaves and on the under-side. Unless the problem is severe, it probably won't kill the cycad, but you could use a white-oil solution. Depending on the size of your plant this could be difficult.

BT is a bacteria (Bacillus thuringiensis) that attacks caterpillars, it's available in Australia but I've never used it. That Cycad Blue Moth is apparently common on the east coast but luckily we don't seem to have it here. BT (sold as Dipel here) is supposed to deal with the caterpillars quite effectively.

I've heard that its a native , very small moth and grubs bore into foliage , and really destroy foliage . Have large rows of Cycas revoluta that get really badly affected. Continuos spraying can help , but its best to remove all foliage , This will not affect plant at all , actually speeds up growth .

Ihave a cycas revoluta about 6' foot tall , the trunk is weak and has no growth at the top, the bottom half is thriveing with alot of growth, why is the top not growing new foliage, what should I do to save my cycad

we have a cycas thourasii that is about 17 years old that has all the pups but not any growth from the top of the plant it has a beautiful cone but we are unsure if it will give us more frongs from the top
