What's wrong with my Bamboo !!!!

As I have not been crawing around under the bamboo for a couple of weeks I did not see these till this morning. I asked hubby he said they have been down on the ground for a couple of weeks. Well a few weeks back we had rain and down that end of the block the water gets blocked by all the mulch so it could be pretty damp under there, so maybe its a fungus or mould of sorts..I did feed them the lawn food after the rain and I could have been a little heavy handed in my haste to get away from all the insects that live under them..So any idea's....Cheers..MM.

Amazing the growth they have put on the last few weeks some is two meters so they would be 6mts tall now:

Did you get much wind from that tropical low a couple of weeks ago (the cyclone that wasn't a cyclone!)?

I lost the tops of a few new culms on a couple of varieties due to the wind. The Damage looks the same as mine and I think the blackness is just due to the tops shriveling on the ground. I wouldn't worry about it too much as the rest of the clump looks healthy to me. Some of the Bamboo boffins might be able to offer more info.

Thanks Andrew...Yes not only wind but a bit of rain too. The rest of the clumps nine all up are about 2mts from the back fence so they would not have got much wind I thought it may a been some kind of mildew due to the water sitting there. I thought Richard may have been around to answer but never mind he will eventually..Thanks again....Cheers....MM.

Heather, this is not bamboo, it is lucky bamboo.. people on the forum will not answer you or make you feel stupid posting this.. my suggestions is put the plant in water and put in a bit of superthrive fertilizer. You could also put it into a container with some potting soil and cover the soil with rocks so the soil wont float..It should recover then.. I actually have three sets of lucky bamboo and all are in complete water only, one set I have had for 7 years and never a problem, I have one I grow in my betta tank too.. it wont make it growing in the conditions you have it in I dont think... My guess is you're over-watering as it's a low area that may not drain particularly if your soil is heavy(clay). When temps are in the 90's I water each day, 80's every other day, 70's every third day. This is just a guideline and you should make adjustments accordingly, if plants fold their leaves lengthwise they want more water, if they yellow and droop they want less. A suggestion I would make is to not put small, insignificant plants in the ground. I purchase 1 gallon plants and re-pot them to a 5 gal. container. This allows me to place where they get the most sun and provide them with the best soil possible. By the end of the summer I have 6-10 4-5 ft. culms. If I have the pots I re-pot again to 10 gal. pots in Sept. which they fill with rhizomes thru the fall. I move them to a protected area for the winter and next Spring they should double the number of culms and add 3 ft. of height. These results assume due diligence in watering, fertilizing, mulching and protecting from wind and cold. Good luck.

Hum...... Never hurts to change the water. It should not smell or look yucky. Might flush the pot by filling and pouring off all water and refilling repeating say 2 or 3 times. This should flush most of the build up of minerals and sediments. If the plant does not perk up you might try a liquid fertilizer- dilute it to something like a 1/4 strength.

The seasol would probably help since they were already in pots before the replanting, so none to little root damage when transplanted. I noticed in the first picture it looks like you can see the size of the original pot by the shape of the soil around the transplant. If that is the case, then they may not be getting enough water since you have to realize, the size of the rootball, or original pot size, is the only area the roots are. It will take some time for the roots to grow into the new soil surrounding the roots, and the water in the original rootball can be absorbed quickly, and I've seen people under water their bamboos thinking that the soil is moist, but they are only checking the soil 'around' the transplant, and not the soil where the actual roots are.

Andrew is pretty much on the money there,looks like they have snapped off by wind,this happen a lot.I would start to take it easy on the fertiliser routine now though,as too much can result in softer growth,your oldhamii will be well established now and will be fine with applications of fert 3 time a year now.

Hi Richard...Would you believe that was the first time I had fed them this growing season.
I did not feed them at all in the Spring I felt it was too dry, even with hose watering
And decided to wait till we had a bit of rain, bad idea was it.
You know they looked so healthy I though I would leave them be, but thanks for that tip..
