Autumn Colours

Heres some pics from The Hobart botanical gardens,i took last week.The colours really were that good.Thanks to MM for technical assistance.

The Birch is just one tree, about 30 years old and considerably taller than the house. There is a small Sycamore Maple cultivar next to it, not a single leaf left, and a Kwanzan Cherry next to that, finally going a dull greeny-gold. A few species have been completely bare for weeks while others only just starting to turn. The Rowans which provide most of our autumn colour were a complete damp squib this year, green to touch-of-yellow to gone. Its been very wet and dull until this week, now its sunny and cold but probably too late to give us much colour.

A Taxus with autumn colour, or something else?

Yes ive seen Taxus baccata also some of the cultivars with bronze colouration in a few garden centres but that one look interesting maybe just extra colouration it might go back to being green again in the summer.I think its Taxus baccata 'fastigata' they get very broad with age. However there are some Taxus baccata and Taxus cuspidata cultivers that stay narrow.

Beautiful pics... I was confused at first when I saw you were from Brisbane, I didn't think you got autumn colours up there!?!

We are a month or so behind tassie here in Adelaide but get the same intensity of autumn leaf colour. I'll post some in a few weeks.

I love japanese maple. I wish we could grow them and have the colours here Mum had opne in her garden at Corowa, In NSW on the murray and it was my favourite tree. Thanks for sharing your shots with us. Jan

Do you have any other pictures of Tassie? We were there last spring. Beautiful place, though not as tourist friendly as we found it twenty years earlier (I posted about that recently in Conversations).

Did you only go to Hobart? Did you go on the Cadbury's tour with the kids? This time the wind was blowing the wrong way but last time we went we could smell the factory before we could see it. I wonder if anyone has ever done a survey to find out whether the people living nearby eat more chocolate or less chocolate than average. Did you get up Mount Wellington? Incredible to be walking round the city streets in lovely spring weather in the morning and playing in snow high above the city in the afternoon.

great pics, I would love to live in a climate where you can get those beautiful autumn colours, I just think theyre amazing. I always wonder what it would be like to have that "fall" of leaves too in countries like the USA, it must be great to have such a dramatic change of seasons.

Hi Macbirch,
Yes we took the kids to the Cadburys factory,which they liked but were disapointed not to see any oompa loompas!
We went up Mt Wellington which had a bit of snow on the top which the kids also loved.
We mainly stayed around Hobart but went down to Huonville and around some other small towns.
