I only trap rabbits, kitty. I could not possibly trap all the squirrels. Plus, both rabbits and squirrels are considered "pests" here in California, and you're not allowed to trap and release them, or you'll be fined. I do release the rabbits, but just to my own front yard. The squirrels would be impossible - I would be trapping hundreds of them. I use poison bait stations with non-through kill bait, so I won't kill a hawk, owl, coyote, my own dog, or a weasel that might eat the poisoned squirrel or rat. The only downside of using non-through kill bait is there is NO antidote. So, you must make sure your dog or small children cannot get to the bait. Patty S.

That's a beautiful tiger, Brad! Sherry

Thank you, Penny, Oubliette, jenny and Roberta! I am ever more hopeful for an entire summer of hummers next season! -Thank you all for sharing your experiences and for your encouragement and support. : ) Oubliette, I have yet to hear the voice of a hummingbird -well, in the feather, that is (have heard recordings though), but I did once catch wind of the hum of this one's wings! -a unique sound, that! It's good to know that they have a voice -I look forward to listening in! You don't say, jenny! -way up on the 18th floor?!!! -I had no idea the heights these wee wildlings would go to! I really must share this with a friend of mine who's balcony is 15 lower than that -Wow, I would have never guessed! Thank you for sharing. I know I'll likely never see the numbers that California Frank is graced with (just saw his photo album - Wow! -hummingbird heaven!), but one, two or even a few jewels setting claim on my small urban garden will fit just right. Keep a humm in your heart! ~Shadyswing

I was thinking along the lines maire_cate suggested. I'd be concerned about a medical issue and a lot of times people don't realize there's something wrong. It'd be doing the friends and the dog harm to not say something or worse yet, lie about it. The other thing that comes to mind, and you didn't say what kind of dog it is, but if it's an outdoor dog, (outside a lot) they will often have a bad odor. Generally a good shampooing will cover it for a bit but I suspect it's something to deal with being outside more. I notice it on most all dogs that spend a lot of time outdoors. I say ask about whether the dog has been checked out by a vet and if it has then tell them it needs grooming. Seems to me you like the dog and want it there, just don't want the smell and that's not unreasonable. Good luck.
