Why do they do it so early....

20 years ago

Those Kookaburra's start so early in the morning even before its light. I think we have a extended family around our area because when ones starts they all follow and its like a echo coming from everywhere. We do have a Mum and a Bub in the gum tree down the chook yard the little one sits for ages on the chook yard gate probably waiting for Mum to being home some food..

I am amazed at how many of these pumpkins have come up in the last few weeks.

Dont know what to call them guess it all depends where you come from Jap or Kent ??

They are Jap MM the Kent are a lighter colour & usually bigger, love the Kooka.

Hi Jan...I always thought they were the same,
And thats a Big pumpkin for a Jap or Kent.
Much bigger than you see in the shops around here..MM.

bud: Probably because most gardening information out there is geared toward the rest of the country that has frigid weather and shorter seasons. Here in Southern California we do any type of graft year round and never have to worry about hardening off before the winter frost would kill new growth. Dormant wood and rootstocks is useful for shipping them long distances, but as you figured, grafts take well when the tree is growing. I'm not sure many are putting out their vegetables and annuals that early - some maybe, a sow and forget them to have them done and out of the way... But many times annuals and vegetables are the last things sown, they aren't going to germinate until weather begins to warm a bit. Many perennials, trees, shrubs will need 90 days or more of chill - those go out first for me, Solstice may even be late for a few of those seeds.. marking the Solstice by way of sowing a few things is a way of recognizing the season. However, I don't anticipate having much free time that week and likely will be sowing nothing. DH is already making noises like he'd enjoy digging clams that night! As though Christmas and all the food prep etc just takes care of itself magically ;), and sandy wet clothes and sandy clams in the shell are no extra chore at all.

I love the exercise and the connection with nature. I also love learning how to grow fruits and vegetables. It's so much better eating veg I grew myself (hat-tip Mother Nature) using organic methods, it tastes better and forces me to eat more healthily than I might otherwise. Also it forces me to get more creative with the cooking-- after the 8th picking of green beans you gotta do *something* different right? Growing and propagating fruit trees is all that but also an investment in the future. I love looking out at the figs, blueberries and pawpaws and thinking of the bounty in years to come. My housemate does the ornamentals and together we're transforming the land around us into a paradise. I could never give this up, not even if all the mosquitoes in Georgia try to keep me from it. Yep, it has a name - Florida Weave. Used by many and generally works well. There are some great pics of it in some of the posts here. Search 'florida weave' if you want to take a look at them. You are right, in long rows additional poles are needed. ;) I had some 20 left-over plants and not enough cages for them this year so I rigged up a long FW row for them and set 6' T-posts every 3rd plant (every 6' or so). Working great so far but like yours, mine are still only about 3-4' tall. I think I still prefer my CRW cages though. ;) Dave

Great quality photos - sadly, Kookaburra's are rarely seen now in Melbourne suburbs. Like the pumpkins.

Lovely shots MM, well I'd rather have them starting early, than the crows. Kooka numbers here depleting, we seldom see them any more. "Progress"

there used to be a couple which perched on the balcony outside the Flinders hospital cafeteria years ago, chorussing their heads off! I wonder if their offspring are keeping up that tradition?

But this time they had the decency to wait till after 4am no going back to sleep now though.
Hi Ashke I live on a street across from a river so there are heaps of tall gums everywhere.
Maybe it Kooka paradise plenty of food and water not much pollution.
I only hear them in the Summer and Autumn so maybe they fly North when it gets cold.

They're cheery things to have around certainly, MM. We actually have a pair nesting in our street, less than 3Km from the GPO, Kookaburras, that is, not pumpkins.
Yes, one of the things I really love about Brisbane is the amount of native wildlife we have - huge variety of birds, lizards galore in the backyard, and of course possums in the roof!!!

Love the kooka. Apparently they are being territorial when they call out and if you hear them during the night often means an intruder.We see them occasionally but only seem to stop for a few weeks before moving on.

The gerberas are putting on a good display and the pumpkin is looking good. I have several of those that have come up by themselves and have already picked a few large pumpkins. They seem to do much better than the ones that were planted :(

Nice pics MM. As usual your vase of flowers looks so lovely. I know the kookaburras are annoying if they wake you up so early, but I do love them. We have them most days but they don't come so close as to annoy us...best of both worlds! Yummy looking pumpkin.
