Rosemary death

For several years I had a rosemary in a garden bed, which grew to about 1 and a 1/2 mtres - looked healthy. Then one summer it died, branch by branch over about 3 weeks. Fortunately it left behind one shoot, which grew happily for two years, then this summer suddenly turned brown and died within a week.

Now I keep my garden on short water rations, -pretty much a mediterranean climate -but around this are growing erigeron, chrysanthemums, iris, thalictrum, cannas, which all pulled thru the summer. Can anyone suggest what may be wrong? I know the garden is a bit too acid.
