Yeah, I think that must have been what happened. I didn't want the mini-beans, but they've actually turned out pretty well. I harvested a couple lbs. yesterday, and then another couple today, and got 2 good meals out of them, although they do seem to take more work since you need more beans to get a substantial bowl's worth. After reading some posts here on GW, I was reminded about the leaves being edible. Once upon a time, I read it, but I guess I tossed that piece of info out of my brain, lol. I yanked off a handful of leaves and cooked them up in a tiny bit of butter and garlic, and WOW...the taste was amazing. Even though they're not particularly tender, the flavor reminds me of a roasted pumpkin seed - very nutty and delicious. I guess once I've harvested the fava pods, I may strip them of their leaves for a few more meals. The return on effort and investment for these favas has been tremendous. Not only are they easy to grow, they look great in a front yard, have great tasting beans, great tasting leaves, AND they're good for the soil. I was joking that this fall, I may plant ONLY favas in my entire front and back raised beds, but...maybe that's not such a joke. How do you usually eat your greens, gilb? Sauteed? Stewed? Or raw in a salad (though they seem like they'd be a little tough that way - not sure if they're better when they're younger)?

Thanks esh. Those plants are along a golf course waterway, and unaccessible to non-golfers after 7:00 am. I returned there this morning, but was unable to see flower details (even with a 10x lens), because the morning dew degraded the flowers. So I dug a clump and replanted them at home. I should know in a day or two whether these plants are Mentha pulegium, or Hedeoma pulegioides. The later is more likely in our area, but usually has light blue flowers instead of the pink ones shown in the photos. The stems were square (apparently typical for both species), and crushed leaves had a strong, non-minty, somewhat unpleasant aroma. I'll post back after I check stamen numbers to confirm genus. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

A 'slip of the tongue', I meant to say the SPADIX was cut off, not the spathe. Didn't notice that until I re-read it just now. They're very common here, they're a native. I had some fill brought in and a big plant of A. paeoniifolius came up out of it last year. I already had about 100 plants anyway.

The only 2 that I have that are "evergreen" are: A. Titanum and A. Verticillatus Any others that are "evergreen" I am not aware of, you would think there are many. I am fairly new to this genera and my rule of thumb here in zone 6b is to bring them inside when the nighttime temps reach around 45 F. I have noticed that some go dormant inside right away and others take a few months to do so, in other words I really only have 2 Species that are in fact "evergreen". If you do find such a list please post it. Sorry I couldn't help much.
