difficult to dig

I have sandy soil and I would like to add filterpress to bulk it up, however it is quite dry and hard. i was wondering if i should just put the filterpress on as mulch or whether i should persevere with the digging. if anyone could suggest a good alternative i'd love to save my back the trouble.

raised beds maggiep,

forget about amneding or digging just use raised beds, see my gardening page i have a section on how i do raised beds.

Sandy soil should be much easier to dig after some rain. When and if that comes, go out with a hoe or mattock to attack it. You can have problems with raised beds and sandy soil in that they tend not to retain any moisture (OK if you plant WA plants).

Dogwood is native here--probably some variety of cornus, if not specifically cornus alba. Well, OK--as far as they know about these things. I've read that over 90% of our natural vegetation on this particular type of soil (which is the same kind as Minnesota's, I believe--same glacier) was cleared for pasture before anyone stopped to figure out what it was. But I have seen them growing in "the wild" around here, in copious quantities. But no, I staked it and unfortunately that stump needs to be cut down some more--at least to ground level. I won't worry about the roots too much--and thanks about the advice re: the mound. I am excited. It'll be the first time in my life I've planted something outside a container. (And that was earlier this summer.) Sad, but true. But if Ms. Jekyll could start in her forties, then I'm at least in good company!

I will buy some steel garden edging from Lowes that I'll hammer in around the beds. It'll be a bit of extra expense, but I absolutely hate pulling bermuda from around my trees and shrubs, and I'll do whatever it takes to keep it out (or at least slow it down!). I'll probably also put down some cardboard and wood chip mulch along the walking paths to choke out the grass next to the beds, too. I originally thought Roundup would be the only way I could kill the bermuda, but I set up a bed for tomatoes this past spring without it with some decent success. I just dug up the grass, laid down strips of cardboard in the gaps between the tomato plants and laid down some thick mulch on top. I still get some bermuda coming up, but they're not well-rooted and are easy to pull. Adding three or four inches of stuff on top of the cardboard should be enough to keep it under control I think as long as I stay on top of the weeding.

Use a pot-in-pot system. - Dig a hole for a pot that will hold the growing pot. - Plant as desired, then set that pot into "ground-pots" - Through the season, rotate the growing pot at least a quarter turn to ensure that roots don't root into the underlying native soil. Thank you for the responses! Grow_darnit, (I like the name), I trimmed the vine back. I had a long piece that I couldn't get myself to throw out so I stuck it into rooting hormone and potted it. Ophelia, yes, lots of water. It's raining and will continue to do so tomorrow. Plus, the temperature is on the cooler side! Sandy, I had already put it in the ground and did not want to stress it by digging it up again. But, it's good to hear that they can do well in pots. Only a small section of my yard gets good 4+ hours of sun. I have 40-50' maples and oaks on all sides of the yard. The entrance of the driveway gets the most sun. If the propagation takes, it's going into a pot. I'll post an update in the fall. Thanks again, Tina

No dig gardens will retain mositure - I know this for a fact because I used to garden on a hill that behaved like a seive. Use a thick layer of newpaper underneath to help prevent rapid drainage.

Sounds as though one part of your woes could be water repellency? I've been treating sand with a commercial mineral product and it looks promising. Filterpress is a good holder of water, isn't it? How about trialling an area with it as mulch and pulling it back after a month to see what effect it has had?
I like to partially line a sandy hole with newspaper to add OM, and to help retain water for a new plant: just threw that in.

Len, I was just reading your page of remedies and I wondered what Murphy's oil soap was? Have never heard of it. I use a possum spray that consists of hot chillies, garlic (deters the aphids) and onion, however I am beginning to notice that some of my rose stalks are getting the "bends" so would like to try your remedy.

g'day marrion,

you may have to do a search on google or somewhere to find out or go over to the the usa forums. when i see remedies i post them for posterity. if you do as suggested you will find a substitute product here i'm sure.

I think its the sludge stuff that's left over from sugar-cane processing at the sugar mill. Am I right guys??

Yes, pretty much, Dee. It's not sludge when you get it though, just looks like any other 'soil' product. Very high in nutrients, I'm told. I would STRONGLY advise against using it any time within a couple of weeks of expecting company, though.

Is it a bit on the nose? What does it smell like? Can you only buy it in Qld.?

Hi all, yes Dee it stinks pretty bad. It smells like a mix between an old long drop loo and molasses. The smell slowly dissapears in about 2 weeks. As we are in Mackay, Mum (maggiep) and I usually get it from a farmer friend or one of the sugar mills. The farmer has only ever used it in his garden and swears by it.
