Mandevilla 'Sunny'

Spotted this some years ago in Bunnings garden centre and thought 'bloody 'ell, got to have that one!' It's now flourishing on archways and fences everywhere.
By the way, I've still got lots more pics of flowers from my garden if you're not sick of them, Inga and Chas. Wonder what's happened to others who use to visit this page? Anyone any ideas?

I only visit occasionally now. I got a full time job a number of years ago and something had to go.
I still drop in every now and then.

Seldom seen here, so far only at flower shows, but there are a lot of pink, red and white ones here. Most use them as annuals . They are rather hard to overwinter in doors.

I've been over-wintering Mandevilla vines for about 3 years with some success. Every year seems to be a little better. Even though I have lots of windows in my house, I don't have enough light for Mandevilla vines because I live in Michigan with cold dark winters and my windows are mostly Northern exposure. My Mandevilla vines live in the basement where there are no windows...only grow lights. I use an Orchidarium. This provides humidity, air flow and substantial light. The plant blooms all winter, and then goes sort of dormant and is re-awakened in May/June when it's replanted outdoors. My Mandevilla vine lives in a pot on a shepherd's hook outside...so there probably aren't many bugs to begin with. I do wash the leaves and rinse the soil and repot it before bringing it in. I put a Krogers bag loosely around the pot. This makes it easy to spot soil type bugs. I use a wet-vac to vaccuum any dropped leaves ASAP. As the plant begins to drop more leaves, I begin light fertilizing. Hope this helps.

rockyn - The Miracle Grow may have enough Nitrogen in it to stimulate the lush foliage growth,but excessive Nitrogen can cause delayed flowering...A phosphorus based bloom booster can sometimes overide the delayed flowering effects of any excessive Nitrogen levels..the Phosphorus WILL NOT cause excessive foliage growth or delay flowering...Phosphorus is bloom stimulating.. The fragrance in the Ipomoea alba seems to be based on a mixture of the exact strain and the particular environmental conditions that the plant is grown out in i.e.e.g.,a combination of heat and humidity factors combined with soil chemistry particulars can add up to a 'formula' that equates to fragrance or no fragrance..the exact particulars of this formula remain unsolved...try some different strains and see if you can find one that is fragrant for you..a strain that is fragrant for someone in a area close to you,would tend to be fragrant for you also... Ed, I hope your mandevillas are doing well. Get them through the summer before you worry about overwintering. The first one I had didn't survive until autumn. Did you check the Sun Parasol web site yet? They want gardeners to be happy with their plants and go buy more, so there's plenty of information there. The sites I've looked at disagree on how cold-hardy mandevillas are, but unless you live in zone 8 or warmer, I would not expect outdoor winter survival even with a truckload of mulch. I currently have three of the Sun Parasol mandevillas, all of which I overwintered indoors last year. All were Lowes clearance buys. Overwintering was not difficult, but it was messy and buggy. Lots of dropped leaves and aphids. I'm not sure it was worth the trouble. There are no flower buds yet and it's almost July. I could have bought new ones in bloom in May.

Thank you, zen-man! In the link you provided I found this: For a consistent production of flowers, don't transplant your dipladenia into a container that is too large. If you do, it won't hurt your plant, but it will spend more energy producing roots and top growth than flowers. You may see fewer flowers until the roots have hit the bottom of the pot. I now for sure this thing didn't reach the bottom of the pot - so I have a feeling this was the problem. The container was huge for the original plant size - as it came from the nursery; but I did it this way because I wanted it to grow very tall so I thought it would need serious root system to sustain such growth. Grow it did - but I had no flowers. I will do it differently next year. Thank you!

I suddenly realized that I hadn't read the post properly. I thought it was an allamanda. Did a google search and while there, came across the most incredible "post" of mandevillas. I wonder who/what I have to sacrifice to be able to grow that? :):)

Magnificent annie, mind you, I suspect there's the odd alamanda in there, the white looks like A. blanchettii, 'Siam snow'. The reds, mandeville ....something or other, for the life of me I can't think of it's other name but it is a low, or less, vigorous variety than the more hardy and rampant kind; I was looking at it again in Bunnings today. I've a couple of those in but they're struggling a bit. Tomorrow I'll go take a few pictures of the larger ones.

Thanks for sharing that interesting photo.
Years ago, when they first "arrived" they where called Dipladenias., but eventually they named them Mandevillas

Looking forward to lots more posts

It will be a while yet when we have flowers. The snow mounds are still there and more snow is promised.
Well, it's Canada and still winter. :>)

Canada Inga, Gees, I'd've never guessed. Oddly enough, way back when the Internet (and email) started....geees, early 90's, I searched for and joined a gardening group headed up by a lady from (I think) '100 Mile',north of Vancouver, would that be right? A property, or a town/village; Lori Pepper her name. Occasionally I still hear from her. One of the group of about a dozen lived further north and spoke of 'Cabin Fever', the winter Lock-down. It was the first I'd ever heard of it: sooooo, cold!Anyway, spring for you isn't far away.
