Questions about growing a mango tree.

I live in Mt Druitt Sydney.

I own my own house.

The garden already has an orange tree which one of the previous owners of the house planted.

I have never grown a fruit tree before.

I want to grow my own mango tree and hopefully get some fruit in a few years.

Which is easier to grow R2E2 or Kensington Pride?

Is it easy enough to grow from a seed from a store bought mango or should I buy a mango seedling?

Do I need to buy insecticide to protect it from insects?

If you can give me any more information on growing a mango tree in a home garden I will be grateful.

I hope you receive some local input, but these forums are a little slow now.
Mango is more of a warm climate crop - doing better in sub-tropical or tropical areas. They are certainly a nice shade-tree but as such could take up a lot of yard for small return in fruit, in more southern climes.
Mango is very easy to grow from seed of purchased fruit. Seed-grown trees may be more vigorous, but are potentially "duds". That is, they may produce a little or a lot, and the quality of the fruit may be anything from good to terrible (even if they grow "true").
So, if you were going to devote the space, I would go for a grafted tree every time.
RsE2 can't be relied on from seed anyway.
But really, given they won't exactly excel in Sydney's climate, why not just give in and buy the fruit when there's an excellent Qld glut, as we all do.
There are some good fruit trees more suited to temperate climates and with grafting, getting even more manageable to find room.
Also with mangos yes you may have some diseases to cope with but up here it's fruit bats (flying foxes) and you might even find birds damaging your nearly-ripe fruit.
I know I am further north (near Bris), but I'm now growing some dwarf avocados (yet to flower but going great) but my dwarf mulberries and figs have already fruited.
As you are already growing one citrus, there are now super multi-grafted varieties, but a lime is always useful and grapefruit/tangellos are super bearing trees and don't take too long once established.
Go look at sites like Daleys fruit (no financial interest) for ideas
Don't want to put you off, but I think you could make better use of space and time than a mango.

F&F, "the dictum" is mostly true. Thing is, it's not the only facet one is typically dealing with. IOWs, while caliper will increase more and faster when all branches are retained, one is apt to end up with a too-low branching on their tree(s). So a modified approach is called for. Don't go nuts removing every branch that is lower than where you ultimately want the branching to begin. Take your time. Both you and the tree have plenty of it! As far as seed-grown stuff, I like it the best of all, hands down. And I'd add, trees generally "know" how they should grow. Like Scot said above, the openness of the site is the reason these plants are not behaving like their forest brethren. Sunlight is hitting them strongly from every angle, so they are branching out to take advantage of it. Just curb their natural impulses judiciously. +oM

Question about growing banana trees from seeds?

Surprised no one has responded to your question, but I guess it's nearly August and many people are on vacation. Anyway, yes, the banana seeds you will get will receiving will be much bigger than the seedless/sterile ones you get in the fruit market. In the wild, bananas are still seeded, but the ones people eat have been cultivated from seedless clones. Every once in while a problem arises from this reliance on identical clones (disease, etc., so the industry has to change the cultivar used in the marketplace). I have only grown Ensete (Abyssinian) bananas from seed, and they were real EASY even outside the tropics!

Anyone growing mango trees or avocado trees(that produce fruit)

I won't claim to be an expert but I do have some experience with avocado trees. I do know you need 2 avocado trees to pollinate the blooms to produce fruit. I started my trees from seed in the early spring of 2009, so they've been through 2 seasons of growth. They are about 3-4 feet high, have multiple branches, and this is the first year they are expected to bloom. I've noticed a few budding blooms on both trees already and I hope they produce fruit. They will not survive outside during the winter so make sure they have a sunny window to hang out by during the cold months. Avocado trees are a tropical tree so don't overwater, and you might have to provide shelter if there are too many days of rain. Good luck and I'll post in a few months if there are any fruit.

Daniel, you are lucky to have a wife who understands! My husband is happy too, as long as they're fruiting trees and he reaps the benefits : ) Wow, that's an impressive collection you have there. What type of avocado do you have? What about your papayas? I've always wanted a sweet yellow peach of some sort, but they won't grow my climate... funny how that works.
