Elephant ear berries ready?

I found a few of these old flower stalks on my elephants ears today, when I squeezed one of the berries some seeds came out but I was wondering if anyone knows when the seeds are ripe? do I leave the berries to go brown or anything before taking them off? I think this is calocasia brisbanensis, Im not sure but it looks like it from photos Ive seen.

Hi TG I have a couple of plants growing and they have increased so much in the past few months since they have been planted no berries on mine yet though, so I cannot offer any help to you there have a look at the link below it may help as it seems they must be planted fresh..Cheers...MM.

A few years ago I ordered some of the A. odora seed from Whatcom and none of the seeds germinated. I know from many years experience that in order for Alocasia seeds to germinate, they must be fresh. So fresh, in fact, that you remove them from the ripe berry yourself. Anything less than that and you're dead meat. I had some sent to me from China and they still had orange berry tissue on them, but they were not fresh enough to germinate. 0% on that batch. If you get Alocasia seed from someone, be sure they either send you fresh berries or they pack the seeds in moist sphagnum moss immediately after removing them from the berry, and then send the package directly to you. Wait a month before you take any action. Both of these plants like it really hot, weather like we are having now but weren't having for the last month. I think that once things heat up both of them will perform just fine. Sometimes Elephants get holes in their ears for no apparent reason. If you don't see a bug eating it, I wouldn't spray it with anything. Bug sprays are pretty specific, so you really need to identify the bug before you spray. The only bug I can imagine it being would be caterpillar like the ones that eat holes in canna leaves. You can just flick them off of the leaf when you find them - no need to spray.

Dry and cool will work for both. Don't freak out if they try to start growing in February. Just keep them away from light and they should do fine. The only time I refrigerate is when I want to start something earlier than when the ground warms up normally. I have just removed(last week) Amaryllis from fridge and potted up for Christmas blooms. I have also put Mandevilla, Angel Trumpets, Bananas and Musaenda in garage(unheated) for winter storage. They will go dormant but stay alive and well for earlier start in spring.

Grocery store elephant ears

I started a thread several years ago regarding TropicalÂs on the cheap and someone made the suggestion to go to the grocery store for some tropicals. I went to several grocery stores in my area and found the taro at Brookshires a smaller chain grocery in East Texas. I couldn't believe they had them! Bought the taro and a pineapple and a papaya. They grew great! Except for the papaya. I had to move after everything started growing. Still have my pineapple though. It comes in, in the winter but has been the most neglected plant we own at times and still keeps growing and itÂs 3 years old now maybe 4. IÂm starting another tropical garden this year and plan to get some of my plants at the grocery it works great.

thanks for the link mm, it looks like they need to stay in the berries until theyre ready for planting. they do multiply quick dont they, the one in the pic with the berries is a bit too happy and getting pretty large now, but this is the first year Ive seen berries on it, but I cant remember if I normally cut the flower stalks off or not. I thought Id offer them on the seed forum if someone wants them.
