mini rose leaves turning brown

Hi,

I am new to Brisbane, and a horrible gardener, but I am making an attempt to grow a miniature rose in a pot. I thought if I watered it regularly and gave it full sun it should be ok, but the leaves are continually turning crisp (but flat, not curling up) and light brown and eventually drop off. I tried putting it in less sun, giving it more water, but it doesn't seem to help. Can anyone look at this picture and tell me what I am doing wrong? Do I need less sun? More sun? Less water? More water? Something else? I don't think it has a disease because I looked at a bunch of pictures of rose diseases/parasites and none looked like this.

I grow roses in Brissie but have all kinds of problems so I know how you feel. I am no expert but its lacking something. Could be one of these three things... It looks like it is drying out on the tips of the leaves ( 1 ) either not enough water, maybe your potting medium is not soaking the water in, have you tried submerging your pot in a sink full of water or adding some wetta soil or water crystals.

Perhaps you have fertlized it recently ( 2 ) just a little too much or didn't water it in well enough.. Then again ( 3 ) maybe you have not fertlized it at all for pot grown roses only use a slow release fertlizer .....Looking at your pic do you have it in a hanging basket if yes in that case you would have to water it every day, maybe more especially now with these winds we have been having and if it is in the sun all day that is not a good idea here. I know roses need sun but yours is in a pot and will dry out very quick if left in it all day..

I dont know if I have been much help but some Expert will be along soon that will give you more answers.

I am not an expert either Kirilisa but I grow miniatures in pots and I agree with MM that it looks as though it is not getting enough water.

I would give it a good soak and check the drainage. If draining right through, I would then wait a day, stick your finger into the potting mix and make sure it is still moist. When the mix is almost dry, perhaps 2 days, maybe more after the good soaking you gave it, water again. Do not let it dry out completely as the roots need moisture to survive and to take up nutrients. In other words, not only will they be thirsty but they will be hungry too. If you use your fingers the first few times you will quickly learn how often the rose needs to be watered.

The photo looks to be taken inside. Roses will not grown indoors. They need around 6 hours of direct sunlight. In summer I place mine where they do not get the full brunt of hot afternoon sun. You can also put other pots around to give it more shelter. Pots can heat up so much they will 'cook' the roots.

If the rose has been in the same mix for a long time I would repot with a good quality mix and add some slow-release fertilizer. I spoil mine by adding some compost to the mix and I mulch lightly. Otherwise I would do exactly as MM suggested.

If you unfurl the leaves, you may find webbing, or leaf roller . It protects itself and feeds on the leaves. I think it may form a caterpillar. If I find them, I squish the leaves and remove them. I hope you don't get more infestation. The few I have found on my roses, have not proliferated much. But of course, I do not know about your zone.

There are multiple reasons for leaves turning brown: *Spider mites - these are hot weather pests that multiply rapidly on dry, dusty leaves. Host off the leaves, both top and bottom, about 3 times a week during hot/dry parts of the year. *Nutrient deficiency - Fertilize roses on a regular basis during active growing season and not during extremely hot or cold times. Most common rose fertilizers will have a mix of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium plus trace minerals. An organic, low nitrogen rose food will feed both soil and rose whereas a fast-acting fertilizer is primarily used during rapid bud/bloom time. *Water - During hot summers, rose leaves lose moisture faster than they take it in. Water more often, even once a day, provided the container drains. *Containers - light-colored containers sized appropriately for expanding growth work better for roses than dark, heat-holding, under-sized containers. Tender roots can overheat in hot soil. If possible, try to keep the container shaded during the hottest part of the day. Make sure you use a mulch which will also help cool the soil. *Age - The older leaves on a rose bush naturally age, turn brown and fall off. We tend to notice this on trees and think 'fall is here' but other plants do this in preparation for dormancy and subsequent new growth. You say 'baby' rose bush but I'm guessing this is a Miniature rose and have tried to answer accordingly. If this isn't a mini but rather a large rose kept in an an under-sized container, the problem is probably cramped roots.

Spider mites! See the fine webbing all over the foliage and stems? Spider mites suck the sap out of the plant, drying it out. It's like you having a bleeding ulcer. DO NOT FERTILIZE the plant! It is similar to it having been severely dried out, so it is water stressed by the mites sucking out more water than the plant can take in. What you want to do is wash the whole plant thoroughly. Turn on the hose to a trickle, put your finger over the end to create back pressure and raise the pressure of the stream coming out, then, using that strong stream, wash the leaves completely. Wash the stems completely. There are miticides which can knock them down, but they are expensive and can be toxic to you and your pets. If you remove all the foliage that is going to fall off anyway, then thoroughly wash the whole plant with that strong trickle of water, remove the fallen foliage and any other litter/debris from the pot surface, it will drown many of them. Mites like hot, dry, dusty conditions, which your plant receives against that hard scape. You need to mitigate them by cleaning the plant and its surroundings, then raise the humidity with the washing. Getting the whole plant wet will also more quickly rehydrate the plant. It won't take but a few thorough washings to kill off many of the mites and strongly encourage the others to move on. You should probably do a similar washing to the other potted plants on your patio. If the mites have found this one and taken residence, they very likely are on the others, too, waiting for the conditions to favor their explosion. Spider mites are something virtually everyone with hot, dry, dusty conditions deal with and they CAN easily be taken care of simply by several good washes. It will take some effort and you might get a little wet, but it's cheaper and much more "green" than any miticide. Once the plant starts putting out healthy new growth, you may resume fertilizing. As long as the plant looks 'scorched', it's water stressed. Fertilizing a water stressed plant can easily burn it further. Clean it first, get it back to normal then you can get back to your normal routine. Good luck!

I'm no expert and not aware of your current weather. If it were my plant I would water the rose very well. Unless the soil is already moist. Then check to see how far down the watering went. Mulch the rose if you can afford to do so. If temps are 70 degrees or above and sunny try to provide some shade in the afternoon while your little rose recovers. No fertilizers or pesticides the plant is stressed at the moment. Just give it time too recover. Shade good be an old lawn chair. I've even used a workhorse with an old towel over the top. If windy weight down with a brick or something.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
I have a minature rose and have had for about 4 years.
This year with the very hot days, my rose like yours ,ended up with dead ,fried to a crisp ,leaves! So I rang Magic Garden nurseries(rose growers) and sent him a photo:the diagnoses...sunburn!!!!!
He said keep it in a warm spot, say ,under the umbrella.He said the suns rays actually burn the leaves but the plant loves the heat.
So I moved it under an umbrella for about 2 weeks ,the dead leaves fell off and now I have a whole new rose starting again.There are new buds growing.I did give it a special feed to encourage it a bit and waterered it every day until it was on the way to recovery.The wonders of nature!!
To look at the rose now you would never have believed its state about a month ago.
So I dont know if this applies to you but it happened to me:))

I have a stack of mini roses as a border. I find that as soon as I put them new in from the nursery they go into transplant shock a little and crisp up no matter if you do water and feed them. I think its just a matter of the roots adjusting a little. They've usually been in a state of major flowering when you get them from the nursery.They fine up eventually for me, with a little care (I've killed a couple, now I do the seasol and major watering thingy). It's probably what you get for planting in Bris summer heat. They seem to struggle with the dryness in well fertilised soil a little as well and they get chomped a bit. I don't recommend rose spray at that stage. Now I just go for the biggest miniature I can find as they hold up a little better under pressure. It might just be my lack of skill, but to get them back to the condition they were in and flowering takes a few weeks. Sunburn sounds right. I also debud them because I think it gives them a better chance. I don't lose them now LOL.

Happily the icebergs are thriving and my knee high plants have around 30 roses weighing them down. They looked like a dried floral arrangement up to a month after i planted them (in potting mix topsoil.....yes I figured out that was not a good idea). The flower carpet roses seem to be duds but maybe they need more time. And I haven't killed my latest rose aquirements = yes there's a Kordes and a David Austin there. They're not doing brilliantly - but they are alive *S*. They're not crisping up in the March rain. Yeah! I gather that natural fertilisers may give new plants a better start.....
