Advice needed on planting W.A. Wildflower seeds.

I suppose I should have put this in the Natives Forum, but here goes.

My lovely neighbour gave me this folder of Western Australia wildflower seeds yesterday.

She said have a go, then told me that the seeds would have to be 4-5years old.

They are in little sealed foil pouches in opened envelopes now would they be too old.

As I have not the room or spare time at present for so many seeds but maybe

they would be ok to plant in the Spring reguardless of age. Would love to know.

hi MM, the annuals would be worth a try, over here theyre direct sown in autumn in time for the rains, Im just about to put my strawflower seeds in. the Kangaroo paws will probably need some help with smoke to germinate and the WA ones dont usually do that well in humid areas so they might be very short lived, so it may not be worth all the effort with those ones.

Thanks TG Thats just what I wanted to know, I wonder when the best time would be to
plant the annuals here, as we have this big problem "No Rain even in the Wet Season".

I will see if one of my GW friends on the NSW/VIC border would like the other ones,
I dont think there would be much humidity there near the Murray River.

I planted zinnia, broccoli and onions seeds outside using the styrafoam cooler with a piece of plexiglass on top. I knew that once they germinate that I can't leave the top on but wasn't sure what I needed to do before that happens. Because I had that fear that they needed warmer temps, I've only planted a few so far. I'm going to plant some more but keep them inside for now. I didn't want to have to go through the trouble of taking them in/out later to get them use to the temps outside (stratification I think it is called?)

i would put it in a one gal pot ... damp.. not sodden media .. not fine seed starting stuff.. but the more coarser stuff ... and skip the baggie.. too big.. but full shade ... and then go ask the neighbor.. how the heck they did that.. since this spring ... and while you are there.. if someone can root that.. in a few months.. what the heck would they do with it ... i am thinking you have a local pro.. and are asking us.. and while you are going over.. take them a gift ... cookies or something ... ken

Well it depends if your wildflower mix consists of regionally adapted native (or exotic) species or just one of those commercialized ÂmixesÂ that contain junk like bachelorÂs buttons, Californian poppies, and other such stuff that are either nonnative weeds or not really adapted to your site, growing conditions, or winter. If it is full of plants that are not adapted to your locality, you will see that most will not return next year. If you have some prairie perennials in the mix, it will take atleast 3 years for some of them (purple prairie clover comes to mind) to be noticedÂ Either way, I would strongly recommend leaving wildflower/prairie gardens up over the winter to provide winter cover and shelter to various small wildlife critters, if thatÂs part of the reason you want the wildflower garden. If its strictly ornamental, I would leave it up anyways until spring, then mow it down.

hopefully someone else will know more about growing them in brissie, but Id put them in for the cool season (do you have one of those? LOL) . theyll need a bit of water though, do you have anywhere sunny under some sprinklers for them?

You can also get a "smoke treatment" solution for them. Haven't tried it yet, but it is supposed to help. Should be for sale whever the seeds are sold.
