The two palms are quite distinct. Think I see some adults of # 2 in town, should have a look for flowers, seeds.
Pigeons, fig birds etc get busy propagating vegetation here.

if it is the Arch' species? then it more likely to be the alex' than the bangalow. as it is a clean stem palm not likley to be the royal.

I'd agree with A. alexandrae IF I could see any silvery sheen to the undersides of the leaflets on these two palms. However I DON'T. A. cunninghamiana is the only A. species that lacks the silvery hue on the bottom of the leaflets.

Alex palm fronds have silvery undersides where bangalows have green as Robert above suggests.

The other palm might be Areca catechu, Betel Nut Palm, as len suggests but not sure. The picture and description in my trusty palm book isn't very good.

just looked closer myself and seems to be from the pics i can see the galvanising under the leaflets the indicattor of a.alex', also the bulbouse trunk at the base is not waht cunnighamii's do.

think my beetle nut idea might be wrong on third looks. a.alex' is most likley in all pic's.

Thanks, everyone, for persisting. The least I can do is submit a scanned image of both sides of the leaflet for # 1. Shall try tomorrow to bind # ! out of the way and get a better pic of # 2. Robert, your book is in the reference section of the library, I can't borrow it and do 'field' work in the backyard. Darn!

It does seems to me that there is the silvery sheen underneath (left image) and that the base of the trunk is bulbous.

looks galvanised to me and also i think the bangalow has short red hair type strand along the rib under the leaf.

but just on the commonly side you woyuld end up with alex's long before you would get bangalow's growing as volunteers just on the popularity stakes alone.

Hmmm, that's not what _I'd_ call "silvery" but only a lighter shade of pure green. Maybe it's this new monitor.

But I've got an idea: there is a forum sponsored by the IPS (International Palm Society) that has participants literally from all over the world, and quite a few Aussies from Darwin south to Victoria/Tasmania and also Perth and environs. Why don't you post the photos there and see what is diagnosed? You WILL have to join to post; but it's simple and quick and since I "run" the place, just let me know if you need hslp

I promise this is the last pic! Have tried to exclude with a sheet and pegs (and the eraser tool) as much of # 1, 'alex', as possible.

Two differences which I see on # 2:
A the leaf sheaths form a column which becomes only slightly narrower at the top
B the fronds are quite erect where they emerge

The length of the frond is shorter on # 2 and the no. of pairs of leaflets less (counted the leaflets on the frond 4th from the bottom on both: # 1, 50 pairs, # 2, 25 pairs).

Both are self-cleaning.

I'm bearing in mind that common things are common and am keeping an eye out for mature palms that look like # 2. The ones in town were not, when I had another look.

that looks alex' to me as well rose?

there can be difference in them and you may also have a cross bred from a bangalo?

so if that one is galvanised under the leaf i would have to stick with my slelction at the moment.

Yours came in while I was outside shrouding the 'alex'. That's a great suggestion to have up my sleeve, should be going away for a week, weather permitting, but will still be wanting definitive IDs. Wouldn't a flowering be good?!

Yes, Rose. An inflorescence would be VERY helpful as A. cunninghamiana has one of the (if not the) biggest clusters in the genus: the branches start out pinkish or rose colored and then go to yellowish white.
