The perennial bachelor's button (Centaurea montana) will take over your garden if you let it. Along with: Globe Thistle (Echinopsis) and Sea Holly (Erignium planum). Forget-me-nots and poppies, of course. Malva moschata (Musk mallow)!!! (Even seeding in my lawn!!) Dandelions. :-) (Just had to add that one.) Columbines will pop up everywhere, but they're always welcome in my garden. Achilliea erythropoda (a very small lady's mantle. I've never had the large one self-seed, but I may be cutting off the flowers before that happens.) Clematis--especially alpina and integrifolia. Veronica--not sure of the variety--maybe spicata. My neighbours across the street planted it--now, it's all over my garden, front and back yards. That's OK, because I love it. Digtalis grandiflora (yellow, perennial foxglove). Hmmmm. Hi fennelgrl, The night blooming members of the Morning Glory Family,including Ipomoea alba and Ipomoea turbinata very rarely self-reseed in the cooler zones,in fact most people who are interested to intentionally collect ripened seed from these plants find collecting fully matured seeds to be challenging... The Ipomoea indica clones sold in stores will not produce seeds and will not survive the winters of the cooler zones,so this MG may be an option... The climate zone and nature of the immediate terrain that the plants are grown in makes a big(!) difference in how the plant will perform as a self re-seeder... The following species are not prolific self re-seeders in the cooler zones Ipomoea lobata,Ipomoea platensis,Ipomoea tricolor(which is still very often mis-identified/confused with I.purpurea et al) and the night blooming Ipomoea macrorhiza...also the larger flowered Japanese types of Ipomoea nil tends to be less of self-re-seeders than the smaller flowered species like Ipomoea purpurea... Generally speaking Convolvulaceae plants that flower later in the season and plants that produce larger seeds will not successfully self re-sow... Enjoy your Moonvines (!)... TTY,...

I used to have a self seeding garden - but the drought has put paid to that. Not even the weeds are sprouting!! Normally, I mulch with leaves (not natives because they don't tend to break down very well) and grass clippings (spread out and kept away from the trunks/stems). The council kindly supplies bags for leaf collections in autumn and I get a lot of leaves this way - I always ask first. Any soft prunings/spent annuals/etc are run over with the lawn mower (although I have heard that some people have mulching machines for this purpose) and that also goes on as mulch. I rake up the debris from under my pine trees and use to mulch around camellias. I had a lot of small animal life leaving under the mulch which I believe adds to soil fertility (but they seemed to have died of thirst). Any leaves which do pop up are easily removed. I might be a bit cynical but I think that the idea of pine bark mulch was thought up by some whizz kid in the timber industry who didn't know anything about gardening. Think about it - not even pine seeds sprout in it. I also use the fine stuff from the bottom of the wood heap - and several kurrajongs and one peppercorn tree have sprouted. They are currently living in pots waiting for "better days" to move to a rural home.

all have re-seeded, but not in the right place. ==>>> they never are .. lol ... i would have gone with smaller ones... i would have drenched the the day prior ... i would have moved them either in rain .. or a day forecasted to be cloudy .. and i would have moved them in the evening.. so they had all night to recover some what ... i would have also dug the new hole first ... and taken a big gob of soil with the plant... in the hopes of doing as little damage as possible to the roots ... and finally.. i would have tried to drown them for a few days after.. as long as the soil drains properly ... many plants will recover.. no matter how bad they look ... if you can provide some shade.. it might help ... i have used lawn chairs... foot stools.. anything.. just to give the transplant a break from the sun.. until the roots start pumping ... ken
