Haven't been doing a lot in the garden lately as it has been too hot & dry for the plants. Here are a few things that have been growing.

Jap Pumpkin - came up by itself amongst a couple of other pumpkins but is doing best of all. This part of the vine got away from me and ended up amongst a bean plant.

A slightly deformed Atlantic Giant Pumpkin. Decided to grow a couple of these to show the kids at school. This one got away from me as well (turned my back for a minute :) ) ended up a tree and became to heavy, snapping the branch and falling to the ground. I put my size 8/9 thong next to it to give you an idea on size.

A couple of large ornamental gourds I grew to show the kids at school. Don't ask me what I'm going to do with them, they're about 1/2m long and there is about 5 so far and more growing.

The kids vegie garden. Not a lot growing at the moment, a few dwarf beans, and rainbow chard & roma tomatoes (from months ago). The yellow thing is one of the kid's balls.

Hi GH Thats terrific that you have got a few pumpkins, they both look a good size too.
Will that Giant one get much bigger will you be putting it on the bathroom scales I wonder what it would weigh.
Those Gourds look interesting, someone gave me one once they made a vase out of it.
Your veggie garden is doing better than mine, its empty but I do have a few pumpkn vines
Came up from seeds also, so far only one Jap or Kent pumpkin ?? not sure yet whats the difference.

Good looking pumpkins. The kid's garden is looking very healthy. It's a great idea doing that for the kids.

First, why would you want to try to grow vegetables in the shade? They need full sun. Second, putting 10" of soil on top of the root system of an established tree is almost certain death from suffocation. Try just the opposite. Build your raised beds between the driplines of the trees where they would get at least a few hours of sun each day.

If you are planting strawberries from seed the first year, you are supposed to pick the flowers off until July 1st so the roots can grow and you will get a bigger crop. You are also supposed to get rid of 1/3 of your crop keeping only 1/3 of your runners, next year do the same of your older plants replacing 1/3 of them, etc., each year keeping your strawberry plants at between 2 and 3 years old at all times. Always move them to a different location because of bugs each year, cut them back to 1 inch tall in fall and move to their new location. This is from books and internet and most say the same, but that is for everbearing strawberries. If you have June bearers, you never cut your runners because that is where your crop comes from. Do you know what kind of strawberry you have? It will help, there are 3 kinds, everbearing, june bearing, and another I can't remember similar to everbearing. I thought when you bought plants, they were on their second year? I might be wrong, but you can ask your nursery where you bought them how old they are. And speaking only from books, the cucumbers do not like wind either, they call them ridge cucumbers because you usually plant them in a ridge, a few inches deep in the row, this gives them a sunken bed and protection from wind. I can't say from experience this is true, and my cucumbers did better as ground cover producing much more than the year before, but location is probably the reason why too. I changed them to a different row the next year and on the ground you can say they may have sprouted more roots making more plants.

I just planted fifty Texas Sweat Onions in the same 25 gallon pots along with my newly planted fruit trees. I bet they both thrive. What tcstoehr said about not coving the graft unions is correct. You can still use raised beds. Just keep the trees out of the raised beds by building around them. Will the trees try to send roots into the raised beds? I think they will. However I have seen many, many, many amazing raised bed gardens surrounded by and intermixed with both fruit and shade trees.

Grass clippings are great unless you have used a weed-n-feed fertilizer, if you use your own and there is no chemical then that should be the best... another good thing is compost, you save all your kitchen scraps ( exclude meat or anything animals would come for ) in a little pail under the sink, tea bags, coffee grounds, egg shells, potato peels, orange peels etc. If you have fruit trees and drops, pile them up and throw some dirt on them, it makes excellent compost. sally

I don't know how big the giant pumpkin is yet. It weighs over 20 kgs as I compared it to the weight of the kids :) It is small compared to what it is supposed to be but the fall from the tree didn't help. It has really only grown properly on one side as the other side is a bit deformed.

We just planted some more seedlings & seeds in the garden at home yesterday - tomatoes, lettuce, corn cucumber & silverbeet.

The school garden is going slowly as the main teacher who organised the garden was transferred and another teacher could be transferred yet so no-one really wants to plan too much. We did a bit of planting & weeding yesterday in the school garden though so it isn't being neglected. Hopefully in the next week or so it will be sorted out.

How good of you to help with the school garden, I hope you get a teacher that is into gardening .
The gourds can be dried and painted or hollowed out to make water carriers.
