can you tell me about Clark roses?

Hi,

I'm wanting a red climber, and someone suggested Countess of Stradbroke, only recently imported to USA. Looks wonderful - but I can't find much info it. Anyone have experience and like to comment?

Yes, though I can't help you with the Countess of S. but winter before last (05)I discovered the progeny of Altissimo and Bantry Bay; the gorgeous, velvety double blood-red flowered, Dublin Bay. It's forever repeat flowering at least all through spring and summer - all you have to do is keep dead-heading it; is virtually desease free; grows 2 1/2 to 3 metres (less than Altissmo); has deep green glossy foliage and is lightly perfumed. It is the most popular red climber in New Zealand (a McGredy rose) and is rapidly becoming the most popular in Aust. The flower has lovely form and is definately the best I've seen. My second favourite is Altissimo, D. Bs. parent. This, too, is a lovely climber with large single velvet red flowers. Best grown against a wall or lattice though than an archway, and is a fairly strong climber. Dublin Bay is best in zones 4 to 11, Altissimo zones 4 to 9.

From what I can tell Duquesa is not a tea for the front of a bed. Mine has only actually been planted for one summer and it does none of that first year tea slow motion growth while it puts out more roots. The growth is strong right from the start and the bush is certainly a balanced looking grower with no canes growing off in odd directions. The leaves are much more like Mons. Tillier rather than the Duchess being darker in color but more slender. The blooms are very much like Duchess de Brabant but with more petals and they darken in the sun to a coppery pink. The scent is quite nice, not quite the same tea scent as Mons. Tillier. Perhaps a little more of a fruity note to it. I posted pictures on my Facebook page. Lance

What can you tell me about Paul Barden roses?

I have Allegra and Jeri Jennings. They're both doing well for me. JJ is new in the garden but is very healthy and has put on decent growth for a first year band. Excellent repeat. I've got Joyce Barden on order. I can't wait to see this one blooming in my garden. There are lots of folks on this forum who are big fans of Paul's roses so I'm sure they will chime in soon.

Mendocino rose can you pls tell me about Flagrant

Hi Vettin. Flagrant is a seeding of General MacArthur. It has turned out to be a small climber, probably a good pillar rose. It has a lovely fragrance. After the spring bloom it doesn't bloom heavily. It acts like a lot of HPs. It's not especially disease resistant but isn't overcome by fungus. I'm pleased that you have expressed an interest in it.

Can you tell me about Annapurna rose?

I've had Annapurna for about five years now in my zone 5 garden, it will give you nice lovely white blooms if it avoids a good soaking rain during the blooming time, if not then it will get the brown spots on it when the blooms finally open. It's not a heavy black spot magnet but it will get it during the course of the season, but I don't spray for black spot. So if you plan on spraying you might control it better. Re-bloom is often very good with this rose, there is usually a bloom or bud on it during most of the season. Although it is classified as a HT it usually gives sprays of four or more blooms then the single long stem blooms. Mine's in full sun so don't know how it will perform in shade. It usually gets about 3-4 feet high to 2 1/2 to 3 feet wide and mine's own root, hope that helps.
