The red fruit is a lychee. They look ripe so pull one off, split the skin, and they have a white flesh with a large brown seed. Very refreshing.

Nope - not lychee - there is about 7-8 seeds inside each fruit and they are about 5mm long and a light creamy brown. Can't see a lychee growing outside in the open down here in Tasmania either.

First is Cornus capitata

Second is Mimulus aurantiacus

Third is probably Atherosperma moschatum, native in Tas, Vic & NSW

Sorry simonauv looks very similar. I have been reading up on Cornus capitata and the fruit is edible but not too tasty. That may deter your son.

Thanks for the responses and positive ID's. The Cornus capitata is listed as a weed in the Blue Mountains region (NSW) so I am tempted to remove it - but it has amazing flower displays with those big white bracts...how do you think it would cope with a really serious 'hair cut'(say by 2/3)? I don't think I have too much to worry about with Ryan eating the fruit because the possums get most of them before he has a chance - providing a convenient seed courier to spread the seeds far and wide.

1. This plant is in a number of places and I really dislike the way the foliage is now but, as I don't know what it is, I don't know whether this is what it generally looks like or if the culture has been quite poor making it look bad (cos a lot here has been very poorly cultured and looks less than ideal...). It has largish palmate leaves rising from what looks like a rhizome of some kind. I have not seen a flower nor is there any evidence, like a spent bud or seed cone, left over to help with the identification.

2. Is very similar to 1 but has a slightly different leaf and growth habit and the plant appears to be dying off for the winter. There are old seed heads on it that I've included if that helps.

3. Is very similar to 2 except the leaves are larger and more deeply veined. I am guessing it is probably a variety of 2 or a different species within the same genus.

First one is Helleborus sp. - not sure which

Second and third look like tree peonies (Paeonia suffruticosa and its cultivars and hybrids). The plants are very expensive to buy, so you have something of value. I have heard that they do best well mulched and with plenty of manure dug in in the growing season.

Thanks for the IDs Tony... Doing some reading tonight it looks like the Tree peony like a good dressing of lime too. Bit worried about the hellebores though - they are very toxic aren't they - one of my Son's is 2 and probably not going to eat anything from it but I'll have to watch him closely. And my chooks free range around them too... better make sure no leaves get into the cavy cage too...
