I think Couch is the best lawn it knits into a dense mat, you dont have to cut it often and it will survive and stay green a long time after the rains finish, even the dead couch will keep your soil in place.

Contact your local council & find out if they have a bushcare/landcare officer.They will be able to advise you on plants found in your area that would be suitable. It's far preferable to plant a locally indigenous species if at all possible, rather than a foreign species which is really just a weed.

Congratulations on your dam, Jan. I imagine you want to make a move on the grassing asap. Holding the surface of the walls is no doubt a priority, but also no doubt you don't want an environmental problem down the track. Para grass got away in some spots up north from being used for this job. The ease of using a local grass as Sarah suggests would depend on availability and growth habit, creeping v. tussocking.
We used pangola on our dam's bywash, which receives a hiding in the flood events. It's been a success from the soil conservation point of view, is preferable to guinea grass and various exotic broadleafed weeds and I am wrapt to see it competing with the vile creeping lantana. I remember broadcasting a couch (Dawson? Indian?) on walls, the results aren't that prominent as there's now a good body of mixed grasses including native.

Mulching any extra vunerable spots with a grass hay may give you immediate peace of mind.

I am with Rose and Sarah on this subject. Native grasses will give you an excellent benefit if you are wanting wildlife as well. Around the edge of the dam, plant tubes of wetland plants like Carex and Lomandra species as well as all the other sedges.

Jan, if you can get the opportunity, talk to the people at Barung Landcare Nursery at Maleny. They seem to be very knowledgeable, and have a good variety of natives (including grasses etc) that are indigenous to your area.
