Who's got Crispy Roses in Melbourne???

Well Happy New year and wasn't it HOT in Melbourne yesterday. I had alot of my roses fry on the bush but to my surprise the one that took the heat the best and seemed to cope was David Austins Redoute!!!
You do not want to see my Pat Austin's - tragic!
How did you all fair?

Well I feel very sorry for all the roses down south, they will now feel what our roses up here do...................... And I will watch this thread with interest...... Did you get the hot drying winds as well if so I do hope they did not suffer too much and after a long drink and a cooler night I reckon they are back to what they looked like before. Cheers..MM.

I did get some crispy roses but not as many as I expected-not like in Perth where my roses used to turn to instant potpourri.The wind was hot and humidity was high. I think the deep clay here helped. What the heat did was bring a lot of buds to maturity and I had heaps of blooms today even though the colour was washed out. Most of the roses were in the middle of a major flush over Christmas up til now and it was mostly the older blooms that crisped up. The roses crisped up and I sagged and melted. :) What a lovely cool rainy change this arvo though-gotta love Melbourne. regards sandie

Hi Bonnie, Long Ago is working on their site, so the page being down isn't surprising. I know she's like Burling in that she's a one person operation. You can imagine trying to take care of hundreds to thousands of plants; propagate them all; handle all the "chief cook and bottle washer" duties for the business and household, etc., AND mess around with a web site. It will get there. I don't know who will have stock ready first. Remember Long Ago is on the east coast and doesn't ship west of the Rockies. Burling is less than three hours from you. Actually, I prefer receiving young plants during weather as we're "suffering" right now. Replanted in a larger pot, in good soil, placed in filtered sun and kept well fed and watered, most will grow like mad with this heat. It sets the stage for the perfect opportunity to push them by keeping them disbudded. I'm impatient when it comes to pushing plants. It drives me crazier for them to just SIT there, appearing to do nothing. Kim

Thoses adjustable emitters can put out 10 gallons per hour when fully open. I've found if you try to close them down to one or two gallons they clog pretty easily. Seven gallons sounds fine. Consider that one gallon of water will moisten about one cubic foot of soil. If your plants were five gallon size when planted you not only need to moisten the rootball, but surrounding soil as well. That encourages the roots to explore the native soil and establish the plant. The longer you can keep moisture in the root zone, the less often you will need to water. Plus our soils and water are salty. By watering deeply you push the salts down away from tender roots. Salt buildup is lethal to plants. Hardenbergia are drought tolerant, but that's only after they have become established. The rule of thumb is 2 - 3 years for shrubs and 3 - 5 years for trees to become established. Yes, gardening here is like nowhere else. Our clay soils hold lots of water which can be good, but if they stay wet and soggy they can suffocate roots. It doesn't really do much good to sprinkle plants once a day, but if you're going to do it, evening is the best time. In the middle of the day the drops act like mini-magnifying glasses and can burn leaves. Keep in mind that some plants can't tolerate salt on their leaves (like roses and citrus), which is what the water leaves when it evaporates. It's better to use your drip system to water early in the morning as you've been doing or at night. I like the early morning because I can see the 'geysers' or leaks easier. What city do you live in? Most of the valley city's water conservation offices offer FREE landscaping classes to residents. Other great resources are the U of A Master Gardeners (602-470-8086 x 301), cals.arizona.edu/maricopa/garden/ or the Desert Botanical Garden. A great book I'd recommend is Desert Landscaping for Beginners from Master Gardener Press (we're all beginners when moving to the desert). It has chapters on watering, citrus, roses, lawns, pruning, cactus, landscaping for wildlife, etc. They also have Desert Gardening for Beginners. Molineaux really is a sturdy floriferous rose. Shame about the lack of scent though. I've got Charles Austin, it's a big fella, also disappointingly scentless.. I'm not planning to cull him, but if I had time over I'd probably get something else. There's so many lovely Austins..my faves would be Pat Austin (Glorious on every level! A must have, and not at all strident in colour which you could expect from the photos and labels...very very fitting he named it for his wife) Jude the Obscure (sensational perfume...when it's running) Abe Darby (Lovely flower, lovely perfume, lovely lovely rose) Cymbeline (yucky myrrh type smell, but sensational colour) Eglantyne (great smell, and very pretty too) ...easy to go one, as is often the case, the ones that make the most beautiful shrubs aren't so hot on the perfume... ...have you checked out the Austin section at Werribee?

Hi Rebecca Glad you had a better experience with your returns from J&P with their error. I totally sympathize with you about too much hassle to arrange a return with the other company, and I'm rather of that opinion about the two roses that arrived dead. You're entirely right that you can get better responses when you can talk to a real human being on the phone, but most of my rose purchasing and other rose activity tends to happen in the evenings like this when companies aren't available to talk. I remember playing tag calling one company over a period of a few weeks to get them my new credit card information - totally my goofy daytime work schedule of course, they were lovely to work with. As for the 300 roses, if you figure 20% losses immediately over a winter, plus another 10% inexplicable established rose fading or dying in addition, it turns out to be more or less replacement rose numbers when you're upwards of 900 roses as I seem to be. Depending on rose survival, I might top 1000 for the first time ever this year but not if I get average deaths. Frankly, planting band or gallon roses (most of my purchases) aren't any harder to plant than any other perennial in terms of effort. The main challenge is figuring out exactly where I want to put them, then mixing in the alfalfa and soil conditioner to the regular soil to plant them (I have pretty good soil to start with, so I can dig a rose hole even 2' deep in a few shovelfuls). At around 15 minutes a rose, I can plant 30 roses on an average weekend day without too much strain, though bareroots take more work and deeper planting. I can start on those more gradually in April though, and I have more energy then. I really do consider myself a lazy gardener, since I don't spray or fuss over them much, and in our zones the roses don't get all that big in general so I can get away with crowding them a bit and indulging myself. The folks who have to use a pickax to dig a rose hole are the ones to really admire. Two or three of those, and I think I'd be done for the season. Cynthia

I am so glad I had picked a bunch because anything that was left is a total disaster! Even buds looked like pot-pourri. It's a bit sad, but I guess they will recover. Rain and cool now...delightful contrast!......Cheers, Dee.

I was really surprised at the way that Shariffa Asma(delicate pale pink David Austin)handled the heat. It came through like a trouper retained its colour and did not crisp at all. Most of my DAs did well. Yes MM we did get those HOT HOT drying winds. The Bourbans did really well too actually much better than the Hybrid Teas. (on the other hand I almost died!!)

Hummm very interesting Pam as here in the Sub-Tropics they reckon HT's as one of the best to grow plus some of the other oldies. I do hope all your roses recover ok, and yourself of course..... It was 35 here today and yesterday actually it has been in the 30's for weeks and I have a cool house where the breezes flow through and overhead fans. Still have not used the A/C but I will when it gets to 40 thats even too much for me. Cheers..MM.

I was very pleased with the way my garden stood up to the bizarre weather 43 degrees on Saturday, 16 on Sunday with torrential rain. I had to stake Sally Holmes, the two branches in full flower sailed through the heat but got a bit heavy in the rain. The new DAs in pots were untroubled, even when wet bathers fell on them. Apricot Nectar came out very suddenly, but looks great. Just Joey seems to enjoy the heat. Only Flamingo and Princesse de Monaco browned up a bit, but they are very weather sensitive. Bonica, which I find melts in the heat, were all between flushes on Saturday and came out yesterday. We had big garden day yesterday. We removed all the bird net that's been protecting the new beds from possum attack. Not an easy job, some of the Delphiniums still have bits of net attached. It all looks so much better. We also put in a $26 obelisk from Bunnings (much easier than building one) for Lamarque and Mermaid. Mermaid didn't seem to notice the heat either. Today we have lovely misty rain, so the sprinkler can have another day off.

Do you think climate is changing? This was unusually cold, moderate and cloudy summer in Perth, so far. Last night was raining too. People don't remember such thing. Great weather for all garden plants, so far. - Tom

Yes the weather is changing. Here we have had weeks of around 35 degs every day, where usually in the Summer the days used to be 28 degs and we are not getting the Summer rain either. Its so different.........Cheers..MM.
