Since it says its self fertile, you shouldn't need to hand pollinate but I always try to cross pollinate my dragonfruit with pollen from a different variety in order to increase the size of the fruit. The Red fleshed DF taste varies with each variety. I've had some red fleshed DF that were not sweet and with very little flavor. I would say that the majority of the red fleshed varieties taste much better than the white varieties. American Beauty and Halley's Comet are super delicious Red/Magenta fleshed varieties that are self fertile. Simon

You can get more info on the Tropical Fruits forum - here is a thread I started recently when I finally got fruit. When you do get flowers, you have a very short window of time to hand pollinate them in order to get fruit. Flowers open after dusk, and you must pollinate them before midnight. I pollinated mine at 9:30 and 10:30 - flowers that I pollinated later did not make fruit. The flowers stay open for a few hours in the morning, but by then it is way too late to pollinate them. I do not have frost where I live, and so I cannot say anything about how they will react to that, but if it is a very light frost, I think they will survive. Your yard will have some areas that are warmer and some that are cooler than others. I use a thermometer gun to find out which areas of my yard are warmer and cooler. It seems to be warmer closer to the house and cooler in the center of the yard.
