Any ideas? and something different

Someone gave me this a while ago but they didn't know what it was, if it flowered or anything. Does anyone know what it could be? It is a metre or so high at the moment.

And something a bit different - Ananas Nana - miniature pineapple. The 'fruit' is less than 5cm high. I thought it was cute. I've only had it for a few months and it's the first time it's flowered.

Sorry GH I have no idea what the top piccie is, buts its lovely and green and that counts.
I love your mini pineapple its cute. Can you eat it ???

Could it be cordyline baureri ??
I like the cotton too is that a thorn prickle on the side.The pinealle plant is great too.

Rhubarb is a perennial, so you have to wait a bit for it. Celeriac is a hard to germinate as celery and needs a *long* cool season we just don't get. You might try it in the fall. Sweet peas... the ornamental? Or you want sugar snap or snow peas? They grow great here but don't delay getting them in the ground. It's a smidgen late to plant them. If you are looking for spring edibles, you might try salad turnips (like Hakeuri). Kohlrabi is another cool season unusual veggie -- it's quite good, but it doesn't really have enough time in the spring -- it does well in the fall, though. Also salsify and parsnips and rutabaga, although the last three I hate with a passion!

Maybe you can do an edge on a flower pot. Canister top. Do you have a tile saw so you can cut it neatly into squares. I am assuming you mean just the border tiles? If you did a straight sided canister you could to the top edge in the border tile. Looks like you only have about 20 inches unless you have some left over tucked away some where. I can see the rest filled in with nipped dishes in yellows and the colors you have in that border.Just need to be sure they are all the same thickness. I also like the straight edging then random cuts as fill in.

I think Cordyline Bauerii is more upright than yours. It could possibly be C. fruticosa (green form of course).

So, what are you going to make with your cotton crop?

Love the 'baby' pineapple.

Kiwi & Dee, I'm not sure that the unknown plant is a cordyline as it doesn't have any stems just grows as a clump straight from the ground. Here is a close up.

MM, I don't know if the mini pineapple is edible but it is too cute to try.

Kiwi, no the cotton hasn't got thorns, I think that is a bit of the leaf stem.

Dee, the kids bought the cooton seeds home from school to grow, so they have "plans" for the cotton, and I'm not sure I really want to know :)

Oops! Didn't notice that. Well, I'm not sure what it is. It reminds me of an Aspidistra, but if it's 1m. tall then I don't think it could be. Sorry, no help here. It's probably something more tropical than I'm used to.

Is it an Aspidistra, [cast iron plant], they can grow in complete shade inside in pots, maybe it is growing so big because it is outside, do you think ?. I am not sure if that is what it is though, but it is a good looking plant.

Ahhhh cotton, takes me back a bit, are they going to try to spin it, lots of seed to pull out before they get a bit of yarn, shame there is not a Cotton Gin near you.

Well I am glad that is cleared up, I though it was one of those too.
But did not like to say as all of my ID's seem to be wrong lately.
Must be OLD AGE or something....MM.

Possibly apidistra, I've only ever seen poor specimens in pots. This one still seems to be growing taller though. I actually went out and measured it and without holding any leaves upright, it stands 1.4m high. Most of the leaves seem to curve down gracefully though the newer ones are upright. The aspidistras I've seen in pictures and real life are smaller and seem to be more upright.

It doesn't really worry me what it is, as long as it doesn't get out of control. It always seems to look so green, healthy and tropical.

It appears to be growing in definite 'fans', ladies, so to my thinking, not an aspidistra. I'm leaning towards a distant member of the lily family, perhaps - a LOT of help, I know!:)

I agree with you Liatris that this is NOT an Aspidistra. Their leaves come up individually. I'm embarassed that I didn't notice that. Funny you should mention the Lily family though, because Aspididstra IS a member of the Lily family. LOL.
