Shades, I'd like to do something with this tile, any ideas?

This is the tile took off the backsplash and I'd like to make a trivet or even something small to hang on the wall. I always liked the border tile and would like to make something so I can keep a bit of it.

Maybe you can do an edge on a flower pot. Canister top. Do you have a tile saw so you can cut it neatly into squares. I am assuming you mean just the border tiles?

If you did a straight sided canister you could to the top edge in the border tile. Looks like you only have about 20 inches unless you have some left over tucked away some where. I can see the rest filled in with nipped dishes in yellows and the colors you have in that border.Just need to be sure they are all the same thickness.

I also like the straight edging then random cuts as fill in.

I think I have quite a bit of the gray still unused somewhere, but I'm not sure how much of the border.

Most of the border pieces cracked when I took the backer board off. I don't have a good tile saw, just one of those where you lay a tile across it and zip the blade across, then press down to snap it apart. Cuts near the edges don't work well.

We kept enough good pieces to do a trivet, hot landing spot of about 18" x 18". Or I could do a rectangular planter to put on the window sill.

I will definitely be putting: string lights, an outdoor rug, some curtains, etc. I already have that mosaic table, and a colorful banner. Now, they already put a clear sealant on the wood. The color isn't my favorite but I may leave it that color for now and see if I can live with it. I do like the red color of the wood they used for the trim. I may paint the roof blue. And possibly stain the concrete. Am also thinking of a gel pad under the rug (the kind sold for where people stand a lot) for an exercise/aerobics area. There are pluses and minuses. I have slept in '80s brass beds, 1880s brass beds, and a more modern wrought iron bed. Here are some things to think about. - Metal beds originally became popular as a precaution against bedbugs. Bedbugs hide in wood furniture, so if you get an infestation simply replacing the mattress won't suffice. For most of my life, bedbugs were a quaint old affliction remembered only in good-night sayings. However, they are now back in a big way. If you travel at all, your luggage can carry bedbugs from a hotel (even a very nice hotel) right back to your own bed. If so, you may have to treat or replace the mattress but at least your bed will be easy to sanitize. - You need to plan out where your head goes. Banging your skull on metal is unpleasant. That means you need good-sized pillows for sleeping and extra fluffage for reading. And yes, pillows do have a tendency to slip behind the bed. - I found it pleasant to touch the cool metal with my hands when I was warm in bed. It sounds like nothing, but it actually made a difference in comfort . - By all means get a well-made bed if you go metal. Cheap metal beds flex and move and bend even more than cheap wooden ones. A poorly made bed will make you feel like you are sleeping in a lifeboat on open seas.

I'd like to hear advise on Brava Cedar Shake Roof Tiles.

We just received our samples in the mail from Brava for the Aged, Aspen, Natural and New Cedar shakes for a brownish brick-red brick house with charcoal and buff dappling in the brick. They look great out of the box. Online reviews are positive but largely focused on custom service. I would love to hear thoughts on installation. It seems that it is not as technical as the metal interlock shingles and that any roofer should be able to install these? Is that correct? Once installed, any comments on the look, sheen, color differences or walkability? Are there any issues with insects or anything else getting underneath and taking up residence? This is a big purchase and just trying to do my homework. Thanks!

There's another thread showing the buckthorn cultivar with a number of fruits on it. And it - like the rampantly growing virginia creeper - is deciduous = seeing through it all winter. In general the quality hedges for shade are yew, holly and box. With different specific kinds of these having differing regional suitability. But attractive dense hedges like these take many years to get much height. Whereas fast growing kinds like privet tend to have a more sloppy appearance associated with their fast growth, unless kept formally sheared - as always in life there are tradeoffs involved with this subject area. And with you being in USDA 5 long term cold hardiness will be an important factor. Otherwise with that pine on your side of the fence and the other quite close to it on the other side being where the existing hedge attempt ends their presence is probably what killed the arborvitaes. (Although it looks like you planted the now highly prevalent 'Smaragd' - partial or complete failures both with recent as well as older hedge plantings of this particular variety are rather frequent, due probably to an assortment of circumstances).

Trivet would be nice. I would consider doing the trivet with one large tile base. This way you do not have to worry about wood swelling and breaking your tiles again. I would put the glazed side of the tile down and do the mosaic on the ruff side. then some nice little tiles around the edges or just grout around the edges.

Steph, I haven't been able to decide. I know I don't want granite. I like the look of soapstone, but I've never actually touched any. I like Corian but I've heard some bad things about it too. Formica is easy, it look ok, and quite frankly, I'm a messy cook and it wears well. I may get one that looks like stone and call it good.
