4 o,clocks

Hi everyone I wish to show you my 4,oclocks these are only 2 plants & the difference in them is amazing on only these 2 plants, the seed was swaped with a garden web member & I'm sorry I'm not sure who{{gwi:2111930}}
now this is the same bush{{gwi:2111931}}
now the other bush{{gwi:2111932}}
this is the same bush{{gwi:2111933}}
as you can see they are very different even in the different petals on one flower but so pretty

Another of Natures great tricks, she is always working overtime Jan.
I only have a pinky/purple one and so far it only has the one colour on it.
But later on I will go and have a good look as the flowers are never opened
In the mornings when I do the rounds, same as the hibiscus "Late Sleepers"
Your two are very pretty and so different you are lucky. Great Pics....Cheers..MM.

In general, once a plant sets seed it's done what it's life purpose was. It can stop flowering and devote energy to maturing the seed. The best way to deal with that is either a light shear when most of the flowers are done, or better, individually remove the seed pods as soon as the flowers fall off. Some plants flower again, 4 oclocks are likely to, if you leave them alone. The first flush of flowers are the most significant though. If you cut them back severely, they'll go dormant, die, or just make new vegetative growth in the amount of time before frost. They don't like cool weather, and they don't probably have time to get new growth to the point of flowering much. If you expect them to return next year, you need to give them time to just recharge their batteries and store food in the tubers. They are not perpetual flower machines, if you want those, plant impatiens or marigolds, or morning glories.

Danielle, on Park Seed ($2.50) they say Limelight plants grow to 3' x 3' but on Specialty Perennials ($3.95) site they say plants grow to only 18" tall. I'm confused...maybe Park Seed is reflecting "size at maturity" in zones 8-11. I know my plants didn't get much over 18" but since they weren't in full sun the stalk laid on the ground reaching for sunlight. Anyway, I'm going to order a new pack of seeds AND dig up the Limelight tubers I've got. I'm going to get that lighter foliage one way or another...LOL. Pat, thanks so much for the seed offer :)...collecting the little black bb's from these plants is fun except I drop more than I catch when I tap or tip the flower cluster! Leslie

I know that. That is why I am asking for help with these new ones that are coming. I said, I READ the instructions on a Burpees package of seeds, for growing these, and got different info. than online. No one sells these Bi-Colored ones, except this grower. She has 100% positive feedback and have bought from her before with no problem. The 'broken colored' ones I have seen, are not the color I want. These are a very color specific, so i want them ,then I have them:) I told her that they never sprouted, and I thought they were dead or to old. That I wanted replacements, or a refund, but I preferred the seeds. I asked if these seeds were fresh/new, and was told they were collected this past summer. I cant get them anywhere else, I have searched the internet for them. So I am asking for help in planting them, and getting germination, then I know it is not my fault. And I will demand a refund.

Sphinx Moth's love Four O'clocks & Moonflowers. I posted the picture I took last night on one of my plants, White-lined Sphinx Moth. I had no idea some have pink on them! I'm in z7 and here's a good example of how you need to do nothing to the plants over winter. Just let them die off and they'll come back in droves, ice and all. Years ago I planted a small patch in front of the house. Years later we added-on to the house which covered the original 4 o'clock bed. Here they are growing wild, I didn't plant them. These pictures don't do them justice, except the one with the Moth. I neglected them badly this year and finally got around to watering them yesterday and they are about to explode with pink blooms. I am glad they came up where no one can see them except us because there aren't any flowers until dusk. I had to pull up a lot of them to keep the "hedge" in order. BTW, same thing happened to our Moonflowers. Planted them in one spot and now they're all over the place! Moth East side of house. South side. We have a big yard so it's an organized jungle next to the house. Cats love to hunt there. Had to pull them away from our dog fence, the gate wouldn't open because of them!

I love those little flowers, but when I grew the multi coloured one (top pic.) I found it became an absolute weed in my garden. It was popping up everywhere and it has taken me years to finally get rid of it all. Is it only in Melbourne that this happens? I'd love to try the mauve and white, but I'm sure I'd have the same problem again. I'm glad you can enjoy them there.

They do self seed but it's easy to pick out the seed and the fragrance in the afternoon is worth the trouble

Thankyou for your comments MM, I had to wait till mid day to take pics. as they were closed, Dee I don't have the problem as the first frost hits mid April so the bushes are finished then, this year I only got 4 plants & they are in 4 different places, I feel that if ever they were a problem I would just pull some out.
