I bet this is a weed.

It came up amongst the truck load of free mulch I got months ago....

So did hundreds of Jacaranda seedlings. Iam still pulling them out...

First I though it was a Fressia then one of our candy lilies, but its not

So any idea's, would love to know as the soil is wet so it will be easy to pull up.

hi mistymorn - do they have long strap like leaves?? if yes, they could be a type of watsonia

It is a crocosmia aka montbretia. Yes it is invasive in some areas of Australia. I have found in Brisbane that it multiplies like crazy from underground bulbils and doesnt flower very much after its first year. I started with half a dozen and after 3 years they had colonised a bed 5m x 1/2m. It does get quite untidy with persistant dead leaves after flowering. Hope this helps. Robyn

Perhaps rhubarb. The stalk in picture 3 especially makes me think so. The leaf looks young so leave the plant for a while and it will tell you for certain which it is. Best way--and hardest work--is to just keep pulling the bermuda grass out. Water well, then start pulling when the soil firms and water has soaked in a bit. There are a number of herbicides that target grasses, however few of them have labels for flower beds. In some cases, the grass herbicides will also have some activity against certain broadleaves, so if you go off-label and just try something, you might get a few of your flowers as well. You might look at Preen in a small area as it is recommended for grasses, but don't know what it may do to the plants you want.

Oh. Mah. Gawd. You guys are freaks -- freaks, I tell you! And I love you all the more because you're so freeeeaky! There is some amazingly awesome stuff in this thread. Makes me want to add even more bizarre stuff to my house, because, really, who wants to live without humor and whimsy and ... freakishness in their lives? ;-D Well, I'm the only person I know of whose house is Tudor cottage in the outside, Little Mexico on the inside. What's odd is that I recently learned from the woman who grew up in the house in the 40's that her mother was fluent in Spanish and had a love affair going on with the Latino culture. I had sent this woman some current house pix, and she said her mother would have loved it. Here are a few of my oddities: This hideous little truck - how I love it! It's moved from my kitchen to my living room mantle. My nephew came over one day and played with it, and ended up gouging the wooden bun feet of my sofa with it. ::sigh:: I have a Tatouage chicken on my hallway wall: There's a rusting rooster guarding my side entry: And a scary troll dude sitting on my front porch.

Robyn I will pull them out I have enough weeds now without any freebies.

What a shame as it is a pretty flower. Why do some of the prettiest plants and flowers have to be weeds?

Yes MM, I agree with Plantsplus that it is Montbretia. It is often confused with the orange Watsonia but you can tell it is Montbretia by the zig-zag of the upper flower stalk. It grows a lot along the railway lines in Melbourne and vacant land. I had it in the garden once (before I knew what it was) and it took many years to get rid of.

Hi everyone..While the soil was lovely and damp this morning I dug them out so many bulbs I was shocked I do hope I got them all, but just in case I will keep a eye on those two spots.

I did salvage some of the flower stalks and but them in a vase with a red and yellow rose looks good too. Cheers..MM.

Yes, it's a shame they're a bit of a weed MM, because they do make a very pretty little cut flower. They're so dainty and such a lovely clear colour. Glad you've got on top of though, before it became a problem for you.

Gosh yes I nearly fell off my chair when your picture opened. they can be "enjoyed" with a root barrier going down to China but otherwise yes in warmer climates quite invasive.
It is a very cheerful colour but as with Robyn, I found one small clump of bulbs spread ever so quickly to fill all available spaces. You almost need to sieve it out, like oxalis corms. Fortunately you are on top of it!

Well Alison it looks like I will be sieving for a while yet.
As I found more of them this morning and just about dug my way to China.
Here's hoping this is the end of them..MM.

What I do, is simply enjoy them then when they start to die, I pull them out.
Next year, they'll come back and you do it again when the flowers have finished.

I too thought they were pretty and let them thrive once, to my cost--the bulbils were so prolific they formed a dense mat and choked out everything else.--E
