I have 2 question for you to Answer... thanks

The first question is - I am about to spray my lawn for weeds using Multiweed (by Garden King). I am led to believ that you can spray your whole lawn and it will kill the weeds only and NOT the grass. Is this correct. Last year I used what I thought was a good weed killer and it killed the grass and it took nearly 6 months to recover with these huge brown patches over my lawn.

The second question is - As I live in brisbane and there is Water restrictions (no sprinklers and due to limited time I dont water the lawn) is there a fertiliser that can be put on lawn that requires little or no watering to ensure my lawn has the necessarry nutrients going into winter.

I don't know of any fertilizer that won't require a reasonable amount of wetting before and after application, sorry, Greg.

I suppose you could use those liquid ones.
Now the idea in Brissie it's "You wait till it rains "" then you add fertilizer between showers isnt that what most people do, I know we dont get a lot of rain but I find I can feed my bamboo and hibiscus that way, even though we seem to get most of our rain during the evenings. I never water my grass ( not lawn ) its couch so never fertilize it either and it is a wonderful green at present..Do you really need to feed your lawn so it gets plenty of nutrients over the Winter as it does not grow then.

You may do better to paint the weedkiller on the leaves of the offending grasses that way only it dies....

A layer of Hydroton on the bottom of containers would be about the same as a layer of marbles of the same size. Initially, when they were dry, they'd absorb some water, but after they were wet, they'd remain saturated. If the layer was shallow, it would have no impact on reducing the ht of the perched water table & probably nearly no impact on o/a water retention. If the layer was deep, soil would probably rest on top of the layer & cause the PWT to be even taller than w/o the Hydroton. They wouldn't have any notable impact on drainage (flow through rates), and if you were just looking for ballast to reduce o/a water retention, marbles or stones (something not internally porous) would actually be a better choice. Graham, your question is sorta like asking what type of gun is best. There are tools and guns for different purposes. The two things that give me the most problems are my aging body and the weather. If you can find a way to control either, you will be in great demand. I garden about 2000 sq. ft. which is small by most standards. Two tools I would not want to give up are my wagon to to haul compost, mulch etc. and a small hand tool that is much like the Ken Ho weeder. I even have one that I put a long aluminum handle on. Cheap bare-root plants, or any bare-roots planted after April, often suffer from canker and dieback. They have been held in cold storage since November. If conditions are not perfect, they can suffer freeze damage or dehydration. Discount roses have not been carefully inspected, culled, and pruned-- or they may be culls from a premium operation. Just prune the bad canes off, or to a bud eye at least 1" below any black or yellow bark. It looks like the healthy areas are growing well, so I'd leave them alone. Obviously the cane underlying the dead area on the tree rose has been physically injured so it cannot function. It is broken, bored by an insect, or girdled by a canker lesion. Water on leaves does not cause burning-- that's an old wives tale.

I can't see that there would be any point in using any kind of fertiliser until you can water it in thoroughly. It will just sit on top of hard dry ground, and possibly burn the foliage.

Is your lawn Buffalo? I believe you need to be careful when choosing weed killer on these grasses, because they will kill the grass also. If you sprinkle a small amount of fertiliser on the lawn and hand water, it should be OK. The trick is to push it below the leaves. Next time it rains it should soak into the soil. I don't believe you can have a truely wonderful lawn during droughts. All you can do is stop it from dying off and hope the drought finally ends. Until we get native indigenous lawns, we will always have this problem.
