fertilisers and dogs

Can anyone tell me which water-on fertiliserse are safe with dogs, or rather that won't attract the dogs to eat the plants, ingest the fertiliser and get ill?

When I did have dogs, they were not interested in those type of fertilisers at all.
But leave a bag of blood and bone or organic life open, well that's a different story.

No help here, just a message of sympathy and good luck! My roses are in the front yard, and my labradors are in the back yard.

Hi Keith...sounds like you have a good ethical base to form an interesting business on ...go for it as a vessel and you will have an even more interesting ride . Change This.. '' natural decomposed unprocessed seaweed fertiliser. '' into this... ''lacto fermented natural unprocessed seaweed fertiliser.''.....and you are on your way. It's a very simple process used in one way or another on all continents as a traditional way of PRESERVING the growing season's produce for leaner times... Maybe you could buy some ''silage innoculant'' or even Kefir or Whey .Fill your tank/vessel only three quarters full (to allow for expansion and foams) have an Airlock to allow escape of gasses but no ingress of oxygen (it is an ANAEROBIC process)...agitate the ''Cap'' (as occurs in red wine production) some how (rotary drum comes to mind) and in a month or so (the times needed would take testing ) at 20-35 c you would filter(.3mm ?) most of the solids out and bottle. Should be diminishingly viable in the life forms you choose to cultivate for your customers for 2 years or so.- ;after which you still have all the usual benefits of seaweed based fertilisers. g'day selina, yep they love the stuff(it probably isn't that far removed from what you might buy in a packet as dog food), can't see that it would be too harmfull to them compared to what they would eat if they where allowed to, i think their constitution is better designed. but anyway even covering with much (which should be) they will sniff it out, the best way is once it has dissolved, so maybe pre-dissolve it and water it onto the garden then cover with mulch. also a bit of education to train the dog what the parameters are, ours knows the garden is out of bounds, then we don't use fertilisers as we feed out medium with recycled scraps and water. len Here is a link that might be useful: lens garden page

I find it sad that there is always someone trying to take your money for a product with very little use :( You may well find that the patches grow back if they are just from a single burning. Or maybe not since this is new turf. You can reseed or re-turf the patches, whichever is most convenient for you. If you want to reseed this year, you'll need to get to it fairly soon. In general, burning will be much reduced or eliminated when the lawn is receiving plenty of water. If only you'd laid the turf at the start of June! In fact diluted dog urine is an excellent lawn fertiliser and you might suddenly find green patches instead of brown patches :) You could always chase round behind the dog and thoroughly water each patch. Or maybe not! Can you provide her with a patch of lawn that is a little out of the way and train her to only use that area? Or perhaps just make an effort while the new turf established. If she is spreading her attention around and your lawn is large enough, any burning of established grass should grow back without any help from you. You will always have some brown patches but at least you will won't have to panic that your entire lawn will be dead by the end of the year.

Replace the dead trees, 15 dead out of 65 planted is not great, but not the worst either. The soil may be too rich for conifers, try ordinary native soil for the replacement trees, don't disturb the other trees that have taken. Moreover, don't fertilize new transplants, it would have the undesired effect of stimulating the growth of foliage, whereas they should instead grow the roots they lost when they were dug up. Note that these large transplants have to continue their lives with as little as 5% of their roots. Good luck!

My hooligan (the 18mth old german shepherd) loves seasol, and also loves charlie carp solutions...he's so sneaky, he's learnt that if he bumps my legs while I'm feeding, a little will splash out which he'll lick up. I got a bit worried at first, but doesn't seem to bother him

He'll also try to drink direct from the watering can or hose-on container while I'm spraying (and from the hand-held shower sprinkler if I'm watering).

Before I hooligan-proofed everything, he managed to break open and spread bags of camellia food, potting mix, cow manure, and pelletised chook poo...told the vet who didn't seem too concerned...dog showed no after-effects

Oh ashke - you've made my day - had a laughing fit when I read about your hooligan. Not funny for you, but made me smile.

My nuggett is only a problem with dynamic lifter and blood and bone - I have to make sure that there's plenty spread around and all covered with mulch - so that he can't find little piles to eat.

My retrievers will eat anything organic, if they even smell a speck of blood and bone they will keep digging until they find it. Also love charlie carp and a couple of other organic solubles I have used. Don't seem to worry about artificial ones though, not that I use them much, usually osmocote in pots.

Hmm... trial and error maybe?! Thanks for the tips - I'll stick to seasol for the time being.

When we fertalise our backyard roses we have to put up a temporary star picket and chicken wire fence to keep our dogs away. very time consuming. (but I love them, both the dogs and the roses)

darn hooligan now realised that I have a bag of blood and bone (not even opened yet!) in the laundry next to his bucket of dry food, and wants to come in each time I feed him, so he can sniff the bag!!

I think he's now addicted to the smell, and I need to seek treatment for him

(and no, I can't be bothered moving it yet...he makes me laugh so much each time I can't carry it)

This is so funny. I have just bought a different brand of blood and bone to the usual one, and I thought a rat had been gnawing at the plastic bag. But no, it was my cat. Have now triple-bagged it in woven fibreglass, as the plastic debris just got thrown up on the path (nice welcome home present).

I thought I had the perfect solution last year when I fertilised the roses. I put the soaker hose on to keep the dogs away from the blood and bone, and to wash it into the ground. The dogs don't generally like to get wet even though one is a spaniel. I completely forgot about the dogs and was working away inside, when, about an hour later, 2 absolutely soaking wet doggies scratched on the back door. They looked very happy after their wonderful snack in the garden.
