Where can I get Aeonium nigrum?? Chocolate rose?

Being from the Brissy area, I'd love to hear from others in the vacinity,who know where I can get Aeonium nigrum from???

Plus also, can anyone give me advice on how to strike them??

I don't know where you can get as Aeonium's don't do very well up here I have one struggling along in the shadehouse.
I will check my lists and see if I can find a supplier for you. It should strike readily enough from a rosette treated with hormone powder and sat just on the surface of the cutting medium I usually use a mixture of about 50/50 sand and normal potting mix for things like Crassulas and Kalanchoes etc.

I don't know about Aeonium nigra, but Jocelyn Ainsworth has a few varieties on her mail order list and her plants are very good quality. She has an ad in under Cacti & Succulents in most gardening magazines.

I wish I could call on the favours of friends in San Diego, Mama Z, or better yet, be in the States and send them to you myself, but, alas, I'm not going South for a few months yet. If interested, send me an email to (click on my user name and follow the link) and I'll try to hook you up with some folks who have extensive collections in SouCal, much like the one you saw in lzddr's post (only not so intensive a planting - I like looking at his pictures because it seems there are three plants in every pixel of picture). I know they have plantings of Aeoniums that are shrubs - you could whack four of five heads with no noticeable change in plant aspect. I tell you, even in my little bit of San Diego apartment courtyard they grew to be 3' plants in perhaps two years.

To me aroma is a powerful element in a garden and just the right one can set my heart at ease and bring a smile to my face. I have tried to plant some of my favorite fragrances all around the garden so there will be delightful scents in as many places as possible Chocolate mint to brush past when I feed the birds in the morning Honeysuckle that fills the air by the front door and drifts into the office Lemon balm to tussle my hands in as I step up to the porch Corsican mint between the pavers so that when I walk across them the air is filled with their sweet scent Oriental Lilies by the little pond to envelope you with perfume as you sit on the bench Pineapple mint near the hydrangea so weeding is a good thing In the spring there are hyacinths and sweet and spicy scented tulips mixed with the delicate perfume of sweet daffodils Lavender for summer to fill the air over the big pond Two heavenly scented lavender roses that border the bridge across the pond Rosemary that is clean and pungent dotted all about Bee Balm with its crisp spicy aroma and bright red flowers Butterfly bushes all around for their sweet airy scent and butterflies 3 Climbing roses in red, yellow, and orange that smell of old fashioned roses from a place I canÂt remember. And so many other scents that I have yet to discover and place in my garden.

Herb lover grower, I have plenty of this one, all you have to do is move to Australia and I can send you some! My customers like it, I dont actually use it in cooking. If the words chocolate and mint appeal, try this! Chocolate Mint Leaves Use whole unblemished mint leaves of your favourite variety. Lemon Balm works well, too. Wash them well to remove garden dust and wildlife. Use a bain-marie to melt some cooking chocolate, preferably bitter, but sweet or white chocolates work well, too. Dip each mint leaf in the chocolate, covering one side first - you may want to hold them with tweezers or pin them onto a skewer for neatness. Lay them on greaseproof paper on a cake rack until the first side is dry before covering the rest. If you are using white and dark chocolate, you can drizzle a little of the other colour on the finished leaves for decoration, if time is not a problem! These make exquisite and richly flavoured after-dinner mints, and can be served with strawberries, or red rose petals also dipped in chocolate. With rose petals, remove the bitter white base neatly before dipping.

Bonnie - I mailed your seeds today. When I had them weighed at the post office, the postal clerk told me that there was a bar code across the bottom - I never saw it so I don't think it was too obvious - and he said that bar code would be picked up rather than the zip code if it stayed on there so he scratched through it with something that looked like a thick black crayon. He said it did no good to cross it off with a marker - that the equipment would read right through the marker. Anyway, I am posting all this because I wonder if that is why your envelope took nearly a month to get here. I know lots of us reuse envelopes so I thought I would pass this along. If you see a bar code, cover it with a label or cover it completely by using a black crayon or china marker (postal employee said that --- I don't even know what a china marker is...LOL) I hope you like the seeds, Bonnie, and now that they are mailed, this swap is complete! Is this the same as Aeonium Arboreum or is it different?
If it's the same I got one from Lake Nurseries P.O. Box 336 Monbulk Vic 3793 (about $5). If it's different they still might know where to get one.

I have, what I bought as Aeonium 'Black Rose " it was very dark then but since I have had it under shade it has changed to a much lighter colour, there are quite a few newheads on it now, far too many for the trunk to carry, should I cut them off and stick them into some potting mix.
Could this be the one you are looking for with a more common name ?

hello there,
I am fairly sure that I have a whole bunch of what you are looking for. The one that I have is dark in the shade but it changes to green and purple in the sun. I could be wrong but if you want some of mine you can email me and I will be quite happy to send them. I have got four that are about half a metre high, maybe a bit bigger, and they all have lots of little bits you could rip off and use for cuttings. And if it's not the plant you want you can chuck it in the bin!!!! johnhome77@hotmail.com

I also have one called Scharzkoff. It is very dark, almost black. Got it from either Tesselaars or Lake Nurseries in Victoria.

Rudolf Schulz has this plant. www.tarrex.com.au it may not be on his list, but he may sell you some if you request especially. Aeoniums have a definite rest period which is during summer when they shut down completely here in Vic. They begin to come to life now in Autumn. They may be difficult to grow in the warm northern winter.
