Where can I get Aeonium nigrum?? Chocolate rose?

Being from the Brissy area, I'd love to hear from others in the vacinity,who know where I can get Aeonium nigrum from???

Plus also, can anyone give me advice on how to strike them??

I don't know where you can get as Aeonium's don't do very well up here I have one struggling along in the shadehouse.
I will check my lists and see if I can find a supplier for you. It should strike readily enough from a rosette treated with hormone powder and sat just on the surface of the cutting medium I usually use a mixture of about 50/50 sand and normal potting mix for things like Crassulas and Kalanchoes etc.

I don't know about Aeonium nigra, but Jocelyn Ainsworth has a few varieties on her mail order list and her plants are very good quality. She has an ad in under Cacti & Succulents in most gardening magazines.

Thanks all for your wishes and words of wisdom/support. I've almost done the finger nip many times in the past. Was saved by dull clippers or gloves. This time it was the perfect storm of no gloves, newish sharp clippers and not paying attention. The finger seems to be on the mend. Need to keep it straight so the wound doesn't re-open, but otherwise it is no longer too much of a bother. I was able to find the motivation to go back outside and do some more work. Potted up some propagated cuttings and mowed the lawn. Didn't feel up to planting the pot ghetto. That will have to wait until this weekend. Yea for 3 day weekends. As Sandy suggested, I did have some chocolate. Decided that I should avoid the alcohol for the time being. The Vintage shipment has arrived and the plants are large and in great condition. But it was a bit difficult to unpack them with a splinted finger that can't bend. Cass - I work in healthcare and was able to use appropriated supplies to get the wound edges to be well approximated and secure - the same as would be done with sutures. Dermabond (super glue for skin) would have been great, but the finger would still have needed to be splinted as it was on the knuckle. Celeste, your accident was much more serious. Glad you are on the mend. I intentionally moved from a house that had a hill with a retaining wall because I have health issues. My neuropathy affects my gait and stability and I was afraid of hurting myself working in the yard. Pruners on a hill with a 4 ft drop off might be a fatal combination! Lux - I too have chronic pain. I don't formally plan my ideal garden, but I do make lists of roses that I'd like to plant and I imagine where I'd site them. Gardening is about the one thing that keeps me going and motivates me to overcome the health limitations. Here's to accident free gardening, wine and roses to all. Janelle

I wish I could call on the favours of friends in San Diego, Mama Z, or better yet, be in the States and send them to you myself, but, alas, I'm not going South for a few months yet. If interested, send me an email to (click on my user name and follow the link) and I'll try to hook you up with some folks who have extensive collections in SouCal, much like the one you saw in lzddr's post (only not so intensive a planting - I like looking at his pictures because it seems there are three plants in every pixel of picture). I know they have plantings of Aeoniums that are shrubs - you could whack four of five heads with no noticeable change in plant aspect. I tell you, even in my little bit of San Diego apartment courtyard they grew to be 3' plants in perhaps two years.

I have zero experience with turface. I'm able to get my paws on pumice for cheap. So I just use pumice and a peatless C&S soil. Some things I plant in 100% pumice:). I've heard people using turface. As long as it doesn't decompose I'm sure it's fine. I see people use This. Just press the green this if you didn't know;). If you switch to gritty mix you will leave out the soil. Usually with gritty mixes there are 3 ingredients so the ratio is 1:1:1. The only reason why I keep a little soil in mine because it gets so dry and hot in the late spring/summer. Not counting last winter, but usually our winters are even dry compared to most:). So they soil holds onto moisture a little. If I did pure grit my plants would shrivel up or I would have to water all the time. No thank you;). I would leave the Aeoniums the way you have them over the rest of the warm seasons. Do a little research and once September comes switch the mix if you want. Perlite can be annoying, but some people do not mind it at all. Just preference:). Look up Al's gritty mix for succulents and you will get tons of info. I would love to help I just have zero experience in that department. Here's a nice post Al's gritty mix. The OP I don't think planted succulents, but it's pretty informative:). You'll get the idea:).

Aloebot, are you talking about the World Bromeliad Conference? We went to San Diego last Thursday for that and stayed until Sunday. On Saturday, we toured a couple of back yards in Mission Hills, which was very nice. I posted photos from one yard in the "June blooms" thread. Here are some aeonium from the first back yard we visited in Mission Hills:I think you have all of these, but there are a few that I do not. I do not have the variegated ones in the left side of pictures three and four. Picture three looks like what you call "Sunburst". I think the plant in the upper left of picture four is also an aeonium, but I cannot identify it. It might be something else. On Thursday, there was a tour of a couple of yards in North County, but we didn't get there in time for that, even though we had paid for it :(. I should have planned the trip better, but it happened sort of at the last moment. I was very impressed with Mission Hills, and I had not explored that neighborhood before.

Is this the same as Aeonium Arboreum or is it different?
If it's the same I got one from Lake Nurseries P.O. Box 336 Monbulk Vic 3793 (about $5). If it's different they still might know where to get one.

I have, what I bought as Aeonium 'Black Rose " it was very dark then but since I have had it under shade it has changed to a much lighter colour, there are quite a few newheads on it now, far too many for the trunk to carry, should I cut them off and stick them into some potting mix.
Could this be the one you are looking for with a more common name ?

hello there,
I am fairly sure that I have a whole bunch of what you are looking for. The one that I have is dark in the shade but it changes to green and purple in the sun. I could be wrong but if you want some of mine you can email me and I will be quite happy to send them. I have got four that are about half a metre high, maybe a bit bigger, and they all have lots of little bits you could rip off and use for cuttings. And if it's not the plant you want you can chuck it in the bin!!!! johnhome77@hotmail.com

I also have one called Scharzkoff. It is very dark, almost black. Got it from either Tesselaars or Lake Nurseries in Victoria.

Rudolf Schulz has this plant. www.tarrex.com.au it may not be on his list, but he may sell you some if you request especially. Aeoniums have a definite rest period which is during summer when they shut down completely here in Vic. They begin to come to life now in Autumn. They may be difficult to grow in the warm northern winter.
