I'm bumping this thread because I just bought Sedum Matrona and have a question. This specimen is gorgeous -- not flowering but quite tall and bright green with some budding...no sign of distress at all. Soil doesn't look at rocky as some of the other found in the containers of the succulents I bought today but it's dry to the touch on the top. I bought it for a location under my 15 ft tall deck. The deck is south sun facing and the soil underneath is INCREDIBLY rocky. Like so rocky my husband had a use a jack hammer to get into the soil to build our deck. We're also on a bit of a slope. Anyway, I've been wanting to get some sedums for down there since I know some of them do well in partial shade...I can plant them next to the posts so they'll be slightly shaded/protected from excess moisture but mostly in a sunny location. Question is: How do I know if my soil is well draining? I'm assuming it is since it's so darn rocky but what do I know? The answer is: next to nothing. This is a new hobby of mine. Anyway, do I want to try and dig a hole for this sedum or should I just keep it in the pot (or get a larger one) and prop it up next to one of the outermost deck posts?

Leslie, I had to laugh at your post! I did the same thing, bought Maestro and found it was a sport of the one I do have, Matrona! I can't see much difference between them. They both are doing fine in plain old Missouri dirt with whatever rain Mother Nature gives us and she has been very generous this year. I broke off some tall stems of Matrona thinking I would keep it clipped back so it wouldn't flop. I just stuck them in an empty container of potting soil. Here they are now in full bloom. I also stuck a handful of seedling Virgo feverfew that has sprouted in a stump and were yellowing in with the sedudms and then had a leftover ageratum that joined them. I see from the picture that I also stuck a lavender plant in there. Maybe it will live. I planted out here and there 20 more that aren't looking too good. What I cannot raise in a pot is Hen and Chicks. I must be the only person in the universe who kills these on a regular basis. I had a nice cluster just growing on top of the ground and decided (once a gain) to fill my jar and try again. I mixed potting soil with sand and carefully planted. They began dying one by one and now I have none!. I so wanted that jar overrun with them. I don't have a clue what I am doing wrong. All they got was rain and no fertilizer except what was in the potting soil. This is the second time I have done this. I guess I will just give up on them.

Mama Z, I don't grow Sedum 'Matrona', but from what I gather on the Web of this introduction from Germany, it doesn't sound too fussy, and since you're on a slope already, presumably drainage isn't a problem. It would probably appreciate some soil improvement (and I always give new Sedums a shot of go-juice (transplant additive)) but other than that, you should be fine. If you want to find out how well-draining, dig a hole and fill it with water - I guarantee you that watching the water drain is more fun than watching paint dry and you'll find out information on the all-important Porosity Index.
