New to the list & fruitfly suggestion

Hi there

I have recently discovered this forum and have just read through most of the 22 pages of previous messages. Decided there is so much to learn from others that I must join.

Have read through an earlier thread on Fruitfly in tomatoes. I have raised vegetable beds and I bend several polypipes over the bed to create a frame and then, once the tomatoes start to form, I drape fine nylon netting fabric bought from Spotlight, over the frame and tuck it in down the sides. Had no fruitfly damage whatsoever. It works in Winter as well against white cabbage butterfly on my brassicas. The fabric only comes in a fairly narrow width so I have to stitch strips together to get the width to cover the bed. Try it - its great!

Hi and Welcome ...Great idea I will try that myself.
I have Black Russian Tommys in at present
But no trouble with the fruit fly up till around October.
So if I have any more in then I will give it a go.....Cheers...MM.

That's a great idea! I was thinking of nylon curtains myself, but envisaged having little bags over each bunch of tomatoes. Yours is a much better approach.

You bumped the thread so you must really want some opinions. So here is mine. If you have an electric Wolf wall oven why pay the premium for a dual-fuel range? Save the money and get AG. Better still get a Capital Culinarian with superior open burners. If you must have self-clean get a Culinarian Self-Clean. You still save money over the Wolf dual-fuel and you get an oven rotisserie. If the reason you want Wolf is for red knobs or wavy S-grates...well I can't help you. No one can:) LOL If it were my money I would get the Bosch Vision washer and dryer that can be had on clearance at Sears Outlet,Ebay, or other clearance/liquadation place. I think these are the 2nd best after spendy Miele laundry. Ikea has European sized panel ready dishwashers. So the panel won't stick out,it will be fully integrated. They come standard with a 5 year warranty. Made by Whirlpool of Italy. KitchenAid is made by Whirlpool. Not saying they are the same exact quality just the same corporate parent. Hoods. Have a salesman show you how you clean VAH. IF the distributor is near you go there. I did. Looks like a PITA. I would get the Best by Broan. I would also check craigslist and ebay. You might find one of the better brands really cheap. Modern Aire, Independent, Prestige, Imperial or something else.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe Do you use real player?, it does the same thing windows media player does this thing is a resource hog, uninstall it through the add remove programs if you do not use it..This thing runs all day scanning for realplayer updates. C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe This one does not need to be running if at any time you think you need an update from HP vist the HP web site.. Go to Start Run, in the run box type MSCONFIG look for this entry (HPWuSchd2.exe) in the start up tab or the service tab, uncheck it reboot, a window will pop up place a check mark in the box that says Don't show this message again. You will need to do that exercise every time you use MSCONFIG. C:\Program Files\SUPERAntiSpyware\SUPERAntiSpyware.exe This does not have to run unless it is the paid version, Use MSCONFIG again. That's it check it once in a while and you will get used to what is running on the pc, and quickly recognize new items that can get added with out your knowledge.

Earlier this month my DH went to China for a couple of weeks so we broke down and finally got him a Kindle. Well, it was more like I dragged him kicking and screaming into getting a Kindle. (No, I don't have one but I'd gotten one for my elderly mother and drilled her in how to use it so I knew pretty much all about them.) My husband went from being a reluctant Kindle owner to an avid Kindle owner. He travels a LOT and he was always packing piles of paperbacks in his luggage. Sometimes he'd run out and wind up buying more paperbacks and carting them home. (One reason we quite literally have thousands of them.) He loved just having the Kindle to pack when going to China. He loved that he had 90 books loaded into it. (All but one of them free.) He's in Washington state now and didn't even look at packing paperbacks, just stuck his Kindle in his carryon. As far as the ipad goes, yes it does a lot more than a Kindle does BUT, I wouldn't recommend it for reading for long periods of time. The display screen of a Kindle really does look like a printed page....a printed page taht you can adjust the text size. An ipad or any tablet thing like that will be backlit and while that might make it easier for you to read in a roomw ith no lights, it'll also tire your eyes more....just like reading a computer screen all day.

pantyhose!! - - would stretch to cover a branch of a tomatoe plant and would stretch to cater for the growing tomatoes!!

I'm brilliant - now I don't have to blush when I buy pantyhose at woollies - it's a gardening tool

Gee who wears those things I could not think of anything worse.
Iam the bare legged, bare footed type myself. So dont own any.
Hey does that mean when I go and buy my hubby jocks I should blush.
No way this is 2006 who cares who buys what !!!!!!! .....MM.

I've thought about using a cover of some sort but exclusion netting sold for that purpose is beyond my budget but your suggestion sounds better. How does it stand up to the weather?

MM, I'm like you. haven't worn pantyhose since long before the kids were born and I prefer bare feet. My mother used to get embarassed when I used to go out with bare feet. I usually wear shoes now when I go out though not at home.

You can find used terylene curtains at op-shops and garage sales...probably be cheaper. You can also buy remnants at Spotlight and other curtain stores.

Ah, I can see next summer's veggie patch, covered in swathes of bright orange, yellow and red nylon curtains :-) With pantyhose over the bananas ...

O yes very colourful.. But the Way to Go.!!!!

Good idea that too Dee I bought heaps of curtains and drapes there when we built this house to use as drop sheets when we were painting, and the better ones went on all the glass doors and windows till I had the time to make all the drapes, would you believe now they are on the big glass sliding windows in our shed.. Talk about Recycling I will look there tomorrow and see what they have got.. Thanks for that.....Cheers...MM.

The nylon net is not as strong as I would like it to be and it did on the odd occasion rip in a strong wind but I simply stitched up the tear on my sewing machine. I'm sure in time it will break down in the sun. I used black netting which is pretty unobtrusive, my friend used green which turned a bluey colour in the sun. Buying a full bolt of the fabric is quite a bit cheaper than by the metre.
