Timelapse of plant growing

Hi there,

I am wanting to do a time-lapse video of a small flower (or any interesting looking plant) over a few days, maximum duration one week. I will be creating a short 10 second clip that shows the growing process from propagation to flowering.

I was just wondering if anyone knows of a cheap hydroponic set-up (being hydroponic I assume would speed up growth and would also give me consistent lighting to shoot the time-lapse in) that would do the trick?

The plant does not need to grow large, a few inches would suffice - it'd be cool if it flowered or climaxed in some sort of way...

Anyone have any recommendations on a good plant/hydro set-up or equivalent??

Sorry to sound so naive, but plants are not my forte, so thought i'd put it out to the experts!

Sorry the Oz forum is very quiet these days. Since no other responses I thought I'd chip in.
Unfortunately you ARE little overestimating most plants' ability to reproduce that fast. I can't think of anything that would go from seed to flower in a week.
Your best bet would be something like cress, or even better, sprouts (the type people eat). being legumes, they germinate quickly and you may even find some would reach leaf stage (nothing further).
Nothing sophisticated is needed, you can grow them in a dish on wet cotton wool in a well-lit situation, even a bright window, but since the plants tend to follow the light source, you are right, the light might need to be better controlled. In that case, something like a fish-tank set-up or at least with a constant directly overhead light.
You might need to photograph the un-germinated seed first in situ, and quietly start to germinate some off-camera to replace with as that process will still take a couple of days. Pre-soaking legumes in tepid water for a few hours, helps.

Hi Melissa -- did you ever get that email I sent you about digging a swale to capture rainwater on a hillside? I'm working on a similar project (slowly) and thought of you. Fundamentally I agree with you. It's best to grow plants that want to grow in the conditions you can offer them. I have a couple exceptions. You mentioned blueberries. I just adore blueberries. If you stick to the newer southern highbush varieties such as Misty, Oneal, and Sunshine Blue you may have better luck. Sunshine Blue in particular is said to be a little more tolerant of higher pH. Try a raised bed filled with compost, wood chip, and peat as a growing medium. I'm experimenting with the same mixture, some soil and sulfur added, dug as a trench in the ground. It is too soon to tell, but so far all but one of my blueberries are growing well and not chlorotic. I did lose one, but think that I lost it to hot dry weather when I was away. They do need water. I don't begrudge it to food plants. My other exception is that I planted a couple of avocado trees because Tom loves them so much. I'm not convinced that I'm going to be able to make them happy, but we're giving it a try. After killing about two dozen rhododendrons, I've given up on them. I have two left. One under the redwood trees actually looks reasonably happy. The other, alas, is on its way out. I do so love rhododendrons. At least I have roses! And apples. And plums, and figs, and citrus. Really, so much does well here that it is silly to sigh for the few plants that won't thrive for me. It means that when I go garden visiting and see favorite plants I cannot grow well, I have the special thrill that comes from seeing the less accustomed beauty. Rosefolly
