I heard this laughing and raced on to the back decking and I was quite surprised to see this Kooka so close.

I think it was looking at a skink but it was very close to where the baby Bearded Dragons live

So after a couple of photo's I sent it on it merry way:

Yesterday I seen a crow rip apart one of the Noisy Miners it upset me no end.

Certainly dont need incidents like that happening in my sight again:....... Cheers..MM.

Great photo, though shame about the noisy miner. That's mother nature I suppose but I wish she wasn't so cruel.

Thanks for the comments, I appreciate them. Judy, I had just rearranged all of those plants before I found the rock, so I'm glad you like the arrangement. I had let that corner get horribly overgrown with too many penstemons, hollyhocks, and there were tons of leaves and blooms from the oleanders nearby. I like the cleaner look now. The cardon has been in that spot for three years and has grown a lot. The cactus at the left came with this house and I've moved the poor thing several times, LOL. The other plants have been in the ground for a few years too but were recently relocated the the spots in the pic. Psuperb, thanks for the nice comments. When I started working the rock I was worried too that it would be too big to handle. I'm not sure WHAT I would have done had that been the case. Like you mentioned, I was already worrying about replacing the volume of soil that would be vacated by the rock removal. No small feat for a big rock. It sounds like you picked your battle wisely and cut your losses and still found a nice way for your plant to grow. I can totally understand the approach. Thanks again for taking the time to look and comment. I reckon I do have a touch of emtpy nest syndrome, Christine, but I didn't net this guy. I found the caterpillar and kept it safe from harm in a butterfly enclosure until it went through the cycle. As soon as we found the moth had emerged from the dirt, we released him. You are right, I would never see him against a tree. But I do hope to see him visit my flower beds this evening, along with the other one I saw last night. I'm going to be very alert as it begins to grow dark outside. The other night, as I went to take the dogs out, I noticed what I thought was a green anole moving up my screen, inside the back porch. I thought it odd, since it was late at night, and they are usually active mostly in the daytime. So I took a closer look, and it was a gecko, rather than an anole. While I know there are populations of geckos established in this area, you don't see them real often. I was surprised to find him, and he was VERY cute. I wonder if he was trying to sell me auto insurance???? Been meaning to tell you that the giant red canna you gave me is fantastic! Blooming like crazy all summer long, and making new cannas at the base. It's the only one I have right now that isn't declining for the winter yet. Thanks so much!! The hummers love it! Marcia

They are lawn mowers. Obviously, they are not working hard enough! They are also touted as protectors of flocks of sheep but these guys failed that test the winter before last so they have been relieved of that duty. The little one was so cute yesterday. He couldn't get his legs going in the same direction and looked like he was skating. Tried a few kicks though so he/she is very healthy.

Dorothy, Thanks for sharing your precious memories too. I bet it was a shock to find yourselves somewhere that you couldn't grow okra! Summertime just isn't summertime without okra growing in the garden. Mary, How blessed we are to be able to look at our gardens and to somehow see in them some long-ago garden that meant so much to us. Jen, Well, all I can think of is that your old house was haunted by a non-gardener. Otherwise, I cannot imagine things not growing for you. Isn't it something how much we're influenced by plants once grown by people we love? We wrap up those precious memories and carry them inside our gardening souls, and when we get a chance, we pull them out and use our memories of those to turn a bare patch of ground, or a front porch with container plants, into a familiar planting area that tugs at our heartstrings. I confess that our home has family influences in the same way. Perhaps because my grandparents' homes were country homes when I was a child, I found myself recreating their country homes when we built our country home here. I had to have a screened porch because I always loved my grandmother's screened porch that she had at their country place when I was a very, very young child. I had to have a white picket fence, a round silver stock tank and a windmill for the same reason, though their windmill actually worked and mine is merely decorative. I had to have a barn, though theirs was a white sheep barn and ours is a red, barn-style garage. I had to have geraniums in our first years here, because she always grew geraniums there. I could go on and on, but it sort of astonishes me how well I remember certain things about that house because I think I was only about 5 or 6 years old when they moved away from the ranch to a little country town. I also didn't deliberately set out to make our country home have similar features to theirs, and yet, it happened. Do you know what I have to remind me of my grandfather's small town house where they lived after they sold the ranch? Grass burs. Common stickers. He was forever walking around the yard, yanking them out of the ground so they couldn't reseed. Now I do the same thing. That's not really a good thing, but it is what it is, and it is a family tradition of sorts that makes me chuckle. When we first moved here, we were so crazy about country living that we just had to sleep with the bedroom windows open so we could listen to all the night sounds. I especially loved to hear the mourning doves cooing early in the day as it reminded me of being at my grandparents' home and hearing the same cooing in the hours before sunrise. I even liked hearing the faraway sound of a train coming down the train tracks just like I would hear at night at their place. After the frogs started having regular conventions and croaking so loudly all night long that we couldn't sleep for all the racket, we gave up sleeping with the windows open. I still get to hear the mourning doves cooing early in the day when I first go outdoors. Strolls down memory lane are so much fun! Dawn

How nice to see the kookas coming into your garden like that. Great capture of it too. That's one thing I hate about looking at nature films, we know it is survival of the fittest, but I don't like to see them preying on one another either, especailly when one is injured.

Yes, lovely shots. Sorry about your experience, the minah may have been ailing, my experience is they are absolute thugs and in a pack will drive out all the kookas, currawongs, crows and maggies. Usually even one alone is pretty fast and a force to be reckoned with (ask Holly, she got dive-bombed for months in the back-yard as we had evenaually had 8 nests in the Leopard tree!!!)

Hi TG and Thanks.. Yes they are a pretty bird, we often have those ones with the blue on the wings.
They could be called Kingfishers ?? Though none have been around for a while.
It certainly make a difference when you have a telephoto lens and the subject is close.

hi mm, I thought kingfisher when I saw it for some reason. I think they might be a bit smaller than the kookas, but that's about all I know! my magpies pick off skinks from the retaining wall out the front and it kills me when I see it, but I guess that's what nature intended.

TG, A kookaburra is a type of knigfisher. The blue kingfishers look like kookas but are much smaller, 15-20cms and a beautiful electric blue (best way to describe it) colour. You would know it if you saw it. There are other varieties but they are the most common.

The blue winged kookas have a pale blue where MMs is white on the wing. Blue winged are generally found on the eastern coast, usually in the northern parts. When I was a child in Brisbane, we raised a blue wing when it fell out of a nest. We never locked it up so used to come and go for many years.

hi goldhills, thanks for the info, that makes a lot more sense. Do all the kingfishers make the same "laugh", or is that just kookaburras? I grew up in the bush and I used to hear kookaburras all the time but didnt get to see them very much (not that I really looked that hard :) )

Hi GH and TG yesterday I did a bit of research seems we only have two kookaburra's in Australia, the one above the "Laughing Kookaburra" and the "Blue Winged" which surprised me as I took some pics of other kookas on my block a few weeks back and they had a lot of white on them, maybe they were getting a new coat of feathers hense the lighter colour perhaps they go darker with age.
