Hi Maddy,
why not try some cactus instead. They will withstand the frost. We get down to -5 here in WA and it does tend to knock the succulents around, but not the cactus. There is an endless list to choose from. Tall column ones with smaller clumping ones to go around the bottom.
You could also put some bulbs inbetween as they don't need watering thru the summer. ie. ipheon, grape hyacinth, mini daffs, all small ones. Just to mention a few. Too bad you are so far away, as I could supply you with heaps.

Jan, thankyou for the advice and the offer. Frankly I had not considered cactus - always thought they were ugly, but then I didn't like succulents once so am now prepared to look again. And I like the bulbs idea too. Thanks again, Maddy

There are some great tall succulents you should consider, the wonderfully luminous cotyledons they tolerate some frost and will grow to over a metr and are fast growers. The aeoniums purple and brownish leaves and the green form also grow to a metre also tolerate some frost, then there are the crassulas or the jade plants , the Kalanchoe beharensis grows to 2mtrs but are frost sensitive . The sedums, the tall flowering variey such as Vera Jamison grows to about 500mm....Hope these inspire you.

We get frosts down to minus seven Celsius. Under those conditions I have been trying to grow cacti. I have had success with Trichocereus scopulata which is nearly four metres tall. It suffers slight frost damage when young, so protection in the first winter would be advisable. Cereus peruvianus (normal and the monstrose form) are flourishing. The very hairy cacti (such as Oreocereus trolli) live in very frosty areas. The white hair offers some protection. The golden barrel (Echinocactus grusonii) grows well (but the white spined variant is too tender). All the Ferocactus that I have tried are doing well, as are the Notocactus and Mammillaria.

I also grow spring flowering bulbs among them, particularly the miniature daffodils.

Please advise me, as a new player of the locations within Victoria ,preferably, from which I may acquire large frost tolerant succulents and cacti. I would also be assisted if someone could give me a few plant names, so that i may research them and consider whether i should acquire same. One PLANT i found IS an aloe ferox, I like it very much, but where can i obtain one ...a puppy will do.
