mori1, I'm guessing we've been dealing with some very similar weather.... ;) I removed the Agribon today.......... Let's hope we can get on with spring now..... My tomatoes, peppers, & melon (transplants) all look terrible even though they were covered! I've lost several sweet pepper plants in spite of my best efforts..... Does gardening have to be this difficult?

Hi I really have never gardened anywhere BUT zone 10 ?? Do have a bit of experience with light frost and a couple of hard freezes over the years . I grow mostly tropicals for this reason. If a plant is adapted to cold temps it usually MUSt have them . Eventually it will decline though sometimes it may take a couple of years . i can grow some temperate plants but mostly as winter annuals.. Much depends on night time lows ,humidity Generally I've found that Tropicals are far more tolerant of cold than temperates are to heat though. Some good examples Agapanthus ,Hydrandea ,High altitude orchids almost all temperate fruit trees Bearded Iris tulips daffodils, and most other spring bulbs gary

We dropped to 32/33 here last night/early morning(Ocala National Forest area).My Tomatoe plants are nearly 3ft high set in 6ft high cages,so it was a real pain to try & cover them.I wrapped as many sheets as I could find(& am doing the same tonight)around the cages.I could see some cold damage this morining,but it seemed only the very top growth suffered-time will tell.My peppers & cukes/squash were all covered in sheets & seem fine.Newly sprouted beans seem OK also,but I think they will be stunted for a while.I took a chance planting/setting all these out so early,as my frost clear date is around March 20th or so,but if I get a few ripe tomatoes right about then,I'll be happy.I will have one or two small greenhouses up & running by this time next year,so will not need to gamble on getting my Spring plants in the ground so soon.
