Need suggestions for flowers for friend in Queensland

Hey all,

I'm active on the US gardenweb and have gotten so much helpful advice that I thought maybe you guys could help me.

A friend of mine lives in Springwood, Queensland. Her neice just passed away from a brain tumour. I'd like to get her a plant of some sort (or maybe a small tree) that she could keep in memory of her neice but I am completely ignorant of what grows in her climate.

Does anyone have any plant recommendations or even better recommendations of a store where I could purchase the plant and have it delivered to her?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

g'day tara,

there are native plant online nurseries over here, i can't help with any suggestions but maybe a google search will turn them up?

would suggest you look for something indemic to yor friends area which is south/east qld, out around springwood there are some fairly dry areas and now of course we are in a deep drought more so, so and indemic native will be easier to care for.

also may be best to find out how big her garden space is or isn't this will dtermine whether you can only purchase a small shrubby plant to a couple of meters high or a larger shrub tree to say around 5 meters high.

if you need more help let me know i will do some searching for you and maybe make some recomendations?

Len, thanks so much for the response. I believe her garden area is fairly small so I'd be looking at something relatively small.

I've been googling like crazy but I'm having trouble finding much of anything on the web that will deliver something plant or tree related. I've found a couple of florists that have potted plants for indoors, but their selection is very limited. As far as garden plants, I haven't really found much of anything, although I suspect I am looking in the wrong places.

With the drought conditions you're experiencing there, would I be better to get her an indoor plant? I'd love to find some sort of small ornamental type shrub or tree (like if it were here I would think of a weeping cherry or something similar maybe but I suspect something like that would be ill suited to the climate there) for her to plant outside, but don't want to burden her either if its going to be difficult this time of year.

If you've got any suggestions of companies I should look at, I'd greatly appreciate it. And even better, if you can think of any plants that would be especially suited to a small area and very easy to maintain and care for in her climate, I would be forever greatful! The native plants in your area are so foriegn to me I'm feeling rather clueless!

Mlle. Cecille Brunner' has small blooms, not cabbagy but they are very fragrant and re-bloom is good and it is quite healthy and easy to grow. see photos on helpmefind.com It can be kept to c. 3-4 feet tall in a pot. This is the original form of the plant, not the large Spray or climbing form. It is a Poly-Tea that does well in a pot, in my experience and I've grown dozens of roses from 14 different classees in pots when I rented. hortico.com sells it most years. Lux.

Here are some very, very general comments. First, decide what you mean by low maintenance and not a lot of watering. Are you willing to work in the garden for 20 minutes every day? An hour a weekend? An hour a month? Twice a year? You could put in an all-California native garden that would look glorious in spring, go dormant in summer, need no water beyond natural rainfall, and possibly get complaints from less enlightened neighbors. Or you could put in plants sold at Home Depot that are popular with weekend gardeners because they only need an hour or two of work per weekend: for example, iceberg roses and daylilies look good most of the year (blooms April - December) and are considered slightly less thirsty than a typical lawn. Second, sun vs. shade is very important. Do you have critter problems? Do you care if you select plants that might attract rats (ivy), snails (agapanthus), or bees (many)? Do you want to attract hummingbirds and butterflies? Do you want your plants to harmonize with the style of your townhome? Mediterranean gardens tend to fit in better with our often-Spanish architecture. Do you want specific colors? Do you want something that will look neat and well groomed or do you want a cottage garden look? If you want flowers, you have two general approaches. One is to mix a lot of different kinds of perennial plants: one plant that blooms in Jan., another in Feb., etc., so every month you have something pretty (but 11 out of your 12 plants are dormant). This kind of garden needs a lot of planning (and some, such as roses, bloom far more than one month out of the year) but relatively little maintenance once established. Often, but not always, these are sold in one gallon and larger containers at Home Depot and nurseries. The other is an annual garden; in So Cal., these are generally "winter annuals" (October to April) and "summer annuals" (April to October). They bloom almost all their short lives, but you need to completely replace them every 6 months and be prepared to live with bare spots shortly after they are planted (say, April 1 to mid-May and October 1 to mid-November). Many plants sold in six-packs are annuals. Of course, you can mix them up and combine perennials with annuals; for example, plant 3 of the same kind of basic background shrub and put annuals in front. One of my favorite books is Southern California Gardening by Maureen Gilmer. The plants she lists are all easy to find at local nurseries and usually easy to grow. You also need to get the "bible," Sunset's Western Garden Book. Eyeball your neighbors' yards and see what works in your area, and go to your local nursery. Finally, even though many people are positively itching to get into the dirt this time of year, wait until October to do any planting.

snicker- you'd be dead before a daphne odora got that big. daphnes are great, but they have a habit of dying right around year 5-8, and they normally top out at about 3-4'. they grow slowly, to say the least, and are pricey, though the big boxes carry them for reasonable amounts compared to nurseries. do pop one in, just for the fragrance & looks, but put it in front of something taller. they need excellent drainage. another thought- hellebores would be nice to have a t the feet of some of your bigger stuff. they have long lasting flowers, can take poor soil and shade and thrive on neglect. they ain't cheap, and grow slowly, but they are worth it. if you can find someone who has them already, ask for seedlings- they self sow abundantly - and start that way. it'll be 3-4 years before you see blooms, but you won't regret it, and you'll forget they're there til then. camellias are easy. not high maintenance at all here. just pick the type you want based on the bloom you want and when (some bloom late fall & some spring) and the size, and be patient and let it grow. they'll do that faster with some sun and good soil, but will grow in shade; it just takes longer. if you can improve your soil, a 1 gallon plant, which would probably be about 12- 18" high, would probably get to 3-4 feet in a couple years. most camellias are going to get much larger than that though and you'll want to be careful in picking ones that match the size you want eventually to avoid trimming chores (most get bigger than what you're wanting). camellias have an nice shape naturally and shouldn't need too much fussing, unless you plant the wrong thing and it gets too big. i'd consider mixing and matching rather than doing all one thing. that way if you do have disease or insect problems, it doesn't wipe out everything. or if one dies down the road, you aren't stuck buying a huge one so you don't have a hole. a little variety in shapes and forms is much more dynamic in design, too. you can get a better range of color and scent and times of color as well. have fun with it!

We don't have any HOA here but there are deed restrictions which every one is given when purchasing property. With the purchase you agree to abide by those deed restrictions which are enforceable by law. I would guess that is the case where you are. We have established a civic club with officers similar to a HOA. Those officers over see that the deed restrictions are upheld. If it requires a lawyer to do it we hire a lawyer. We each pay dues to the civic club this is what funds them. Utilizing the local authorities pursuant to upholding deed restrictions is something that you and your neighbors should be doing. Have a neighborhood meeting with the local authorities and discuss the involvement of them in these deed restriction violations. There's absolutely a noise ordinance that can be enforced by the law, there's environmental restrictions that can be enforced by legal means. Trashy conditions breed rats and other pests for those reasons there are laws that can be enforced. We do this routinely here through our civic club and the law enforcement locally. This is exactly what your neighborhood needs to do. It is not as restricted as an HOA but it allows for a way to make sure the home owners heed those restrictions they agreed to and signed on for at the time of purchase. I must say I much prefer this option to an HOA because I have seen some HOA officers that go power crazy and can absolutely make it miserable to live there. Y'all have got to man up and take control because these people don't care about you and they aren't going anywhere. They are legally bound to those restrictions!

You couldn't do better than a Wollemi Pine, which you can order over the net. Info and details here - http://www.wollemipine.com/?gclid=CJPJ5ca2rIoCFTIeGAod0xqjvA. Apparently they grow very well in pots and are easily cared for. The story behind them is fascinating. I reckon this would be the ideal gift.

Hello, Just read your request and thought I might be able to help. Is your friend a gardener and has she mentioned anything about her garden, what is in it etc? I live in Queensland (Brisbane) and would have no trouble suggesting something but gardening is such a personal thing and it would be nice to get something that fits in with her garden style and is easy to look after if she is not a serious gardener.
