Have you considered that a M. luethyi tubercle does not include the portion of the areole required to produce a new plant? The growth point is not at the tip of the areole as with some species, but located at the base of the tubercle. Just a thought, maybe you alread know the methods for grafting Mammillaria tubercles.

I have experienced sucsessfull result of mammillaria tubercle graftings with bocasana, plumosa and theresae. They have been glowing very well and got flowers next year after grafting.
Pups came out from root of areole in the case of bocasana and plumosa but it came out from root of tubercle in the case of theresae. I think luethyi will show as same as theresae. I have grafted 10 luethyi tubercles and been waiting next spring.

Excuse my ignorance, but the sprouts coming out of the seedling on the third picture do they all become plantlets? or are they tubercles forming?

Sorry I know very little about grafting. Is grafting used as a way of encouraging stronger and more rapid growth? Do you then root the graft when it is larger, or leave it grafted?

The sprouts come out in the third photo are tubercles forming.

I use the seedling grafting for:
To collect rare cactus seeds in short time in-house.
Almost all gragted seedlings are in flower 1 year later
after sowing. I experience that Turbinicarpus laui got
a flower 3 months after sowing.

I also try to develop new hybrid cactus. I need a quick
life cycle of plant to develop new one.

I narmally de-graft grafted cactus once collected seeds and size becomes larege enough.
I use 2 methods of de-grafting. One is normal de-grafting and the other is remained short vascular bundles of grafting stock. In 2nd case, roots come out from the vascular bundles and remained grafted character.
