Good nurseries in Sydney?

Hi all!
Just wondering if anyone can offer some recommendations for a nursery in the Sydney area that stocks Tillandsias (air plants). I live in Canberra but I do come to Sydney from time to time to visit family and would really appreciate if someone from the area can let me know which nurseries actually stock these plants so I can visit them next time I'm in town.

Sarah I'm not actually in Sydney so I hope someone there can help, but if you are interested in Tillandsias you're probably better off getting onto a good mail order grower, or attending one of the Brom Soc events. I see from the link below that there is a show on in Sydney in May. Most clubs have sales days.
I've seen a variety of them from time to time at Bunnings nurseries but you are better off contacting the gardening dep'ts there - you will pay more though.
I do know some brom growers in Qld though I'm not a club member but if you wanted any contacts for suppliers I might be able to get them

Thanks, alisonoz, I've had a look at some online suppliers and figured that was probably the best way to go to expand my little collection. I've been able to get a few from our Bunnings stores in Canberra, it's a bit hit-and-miss as you'd expect of course. I'll definitely buy online when I'm after something specific, but buying online just isn't quite as much of an experience as browsing in a nursery though! I've had a look at the link you provided - thanks for that! - and I'll definitely try to be in Sydney that weekend so I can get to the show!

Lavender, the mail order nurseries I have dealt with and received good service are: Marshall's Herbs (www.herbsalive.com.au) - Good service and good size plants. Otway Herbs (otwayherbs@bigpond.com.au) - Send 3x50c stamps for a catalogue. Good servic. The plants were rather small but the ones I bought have come along quite well. Austral Herbs (www.australherbs.com.au) All Rare Herbs, Qld. (mcplant@hotmail.com) - I ordered 5 plants from them recently and a couple of them were a little scraggly looking; however, they apologized for this fact. The plant have since come on well. I will order from them again. Their service was good. Like yourself, I prefer to browse among the plants, touching as well as looking. Have you been to the Herb Garden at the Botanic Garden in Sydney?

I am sure that you could grow many of the less tropical Heliconias in Sydney, particularly if H. angusta does well there. To add to the list of the more cool-hardy Heliconias to seek out, these have all done well for me in northern California coastal conditions, where we do occasionally get colder than you... I never had much luck with growing any of the H. angusta cultivars as outdoor specimens here, and I think it was our lack of summer heat and a little too cool winters, they didn't seem to like it below 12C, and that is right around our typical summer night temps, so they never really took off, but also refused to die. H. latispatha, H. spissa, H. bougaeana, H. matthieseae, H. aurantiaca, H. scheideana All of these come from higher elevations of southern Mexico into Central America, and will take some frost and cool nights just above freezing without damage. However, none of them are the classic tropical looking species with really large flowers, except that H. bourgaeana does come close. There are certainly more species that are worth trying as well, but these would be a good start. As to gingers, there are also many of the Hedychiums that do well, with H. gardnerianum, H. flavescens, H. flavum, H. greenei, H. densiflorum, are fairly common and do well in subtropical, warm temperate climates. Of the Alpinias, A. zerumbet and A. zerumbet variegata are two of the easiest here in northern California.

Good rose nurseries in L.A. area?

When I first started to grow roses, a small family owned nursery near me would order any roses I wanted from the various catalogs they had at hand. Now they don't even stock any roses at all. Up to 2 years ago they had hundreds of pots. So many places gone, I asked one place why and was told the land they were sitting on was now worth millions to developers so they're taking the money & retiring early. Getting so hard to find good nurseries nowadays...

Good Online Nursery to Buy Different Species of Herbs?

Living in California, I can't imagine that you could not find a decent selection of herbs at any better local retail nursery. My nursery carries multiple cultivars of mints, thymes, sages and rosemary plus a full selection of other common herbs. I have never done a side by side taste test but IMO, any rosemary cultivar is well suited for culinary use, even the prostrate forms generally grown more for aesthetics than for culinary purposes. Most rosemary will grow quite large and outgrow anything but a large container rapidly. 'Roman Beauty' is a cultivar that in between an upright form and a prostrate one, stays quite compact and grows slowly. It is an excellent container subject.

I use to have a few favourites but a couple have closed down. You could try Bonds nursery at Terry Hills, they are big and they have heaps and heaps of stuff. They're also not bad for natives either. Also along that road - Mona Vale road -are/were some good native nurseries. And over around Arcadia and Baulkham Hills are some good ones but it's some years since I've been around my old haunts down there so check the phone directory before venturing out.

Which tillandsias are you after?
There is a show on 27th and 28th called the Kurnell Garden Festival. Addictive Plants will be there and they normally have a variety of tillandsias apart from some very intersting bulbs etc etc. The festival is on 27th and 28th April. We always go home with something new.
