Hi. Mike (from the hoya forum) gave me the answer. He said that these can be stored quite a long time in proper conditions before losing viability. I was wondering because I knew that hoyas had a short viability and thought the same might be true for huernias.

Paul the mix is likely the reason they didn't sprout. I start them in a regular high quality potting mix, high in organic matter, but still very well draining. My problem was figuring out when to transplant them to a gritty mix. The first couple transplants were moved too early and died. I now keep them in the regular mix for at least 6 months and just slowly decrease the amount of water they get. Not sure why but this is what works for me. I'm really surprised at how fast they are growing. They look a bit like adenium seedlings with little horns instead of leaves. The only issues I have with the huernias, stapelias, etc over the winter are the damn mealy bugs. They seem to be a lot hardier then hoya seedlings which I lost early on. I have more difficulty getting my hoyas to bloom then my huernias & stapelias. lol

I know nothing about this, hopefully you'l get good info from the experts on this board. I did want to mention that I have found excellent, in depth, seed growing info on the BCSS board, British Cactus and Succulent Society, http://forum.bcss.org.uk/index.php. There are some super long detailed threads on growing from seed. Good luck and let usknow if you;re successful, I love stapeliads, sp? but haven;t been willing to budget for them yet! Growing from seed would be awesome!
