You have done a wonderful job with your Duranta. Is the wasp a problem, I spose when you trim it, it could bother you.

Summer is the time for insects in the garden, Winter is so much better, no ants, no wasps, no mossies, no flies. Ah...Winter....

Thanks Popi.....my only problem is now that it's time for a trim as soon as I start snipping - out they come! And I'm a big baby when it comes to wasps. Hubby already got stung while watering last night - that's how we found out they were there. If I could just get to it I could spray it but as it's inside the bush I can't get close enough. Does anyone know if wasps move on after a while or do they set up home permanantly?

Don't know if it would work but could you cover it with a large plastic bag (or anything that fits) and then carefully spray inside the bag and seal for a couple of hours to make sure the wasps are dead.

Now thats an idea!......as the bush is almost chest high at the moment I shall see if I can get a bag big enough to do the job. Shall let you know.....

My son was stung by a wasp, on his ear, and his ear swelled up like a giant ear, it was very distressing. Ever since then he is so frightened of wasps, hornets, often wont go outside.

When you spray Baygon outside, have you ever thought what else the spray kills, as it wafts around ? I try not to do that, myself.

The wasps will keep returning to the site even if you remove the nest. The way to get rid of them is to spray with a insect killer (I use a black and white home brand one) BUT you must spray after dark when they are all at home so that you kill the entire group. If you do it in the daytime the ones which are out foraging will come back and start to re establish the colony in the same place.

Is the wasp nest in the ground , my mum has been clearing a rather overgrown area and found a hole in the ground with wasps coming and going.
We have used a powder carbryl to sprinkle ove the nest entrance, there are some puffer packs of wasp killer around .
I am not sure what you have over there, as we seem to have acess to a wider range of poisons than Aussies do.

Heather, wasps you describe appear to be European wasps. These are killers as they can sting yo many times. The problems with these is that many people are allergic to them, with tragic effects... unfortunately I am one of them. I avoid traveling to europe from july onwards. Lynnie's are one of the native ones and these are not as dangerous.
