Are there any members who post here from Tasmania?

I would like to find out about growing conditions and climate there.

CP, Lizards are so cool. I envy ppl like DVL who have them all over. Hawks and owls are on my top most favorite list. Coyotes are cool but I no longer trust them. We were ambushed by a pack of 4 one night down in the gully where we would go to fish and have a bonfire for the night. It was my husband, neighbor Bill, my kids and my dogs Jett and Bandit. Bandit was my 100lb. german shepherd. Jett and Bandit were able to keep the 4 at bay til one of them jumped my husband. My husband broke its neck and Billy was able to break the other ones neck. Bandit killed one and Jett severly injured the other. All that within 5 minutes. Never so scared in my life. We imediately took the dogs to the vet to be checked out. Jerry and Billy only had a few scratches, nothing serious......amazingly. What a drama that was. Needless to say, everytime we go to the gully now Jerry and Billy will bring their pistol, loaded and ready. Dawn

As we all say, each to their own. I could not live in the tropics/sub tropics in a pink fit - I love changing seasons and would hate not to curl up in front of a log fire in winter and there is nothing better than being under a warm doona on a winter's night. We live in a very beautiful spot - Barrington, NSW with magnificent views and many people would think we are in Utopia. But in August we are going to visit Tassie to see just how bad the winters are - we were there in February and the coolness of the summer was wonderful. The quality of some of the soil is also an attraction. Barrington summers are disgustingly hot & humid (5days over 40degrees last summer) and gardening is impossible between 10.00 am and 16:00 am. All the gardens I fall in love with are always cool climate gardens and I would really like to develop one before my days are up. Richardqld - I'd love to exchange emails once you are settled in Tassie as it would be great to get the reaction of someone who has moved there from a warmer climate!

Took me a while to find this posting as well as bneing able to log in. Now almost 12 months later and I am in the suburbs of Far East Gippsland. Gradually making progress in what was a non gaRDEN. been here two years. Love those natives,but will take a few years to build up the stock. Always sticking cuttings in, some successes. Errinunda Rain forest = ferns, waratahs, not far away. Marvellous coastal heathland, lots of flowers in bloom and ground orchids in surrounding forests. LOve it.

Thanks for the glad tidings - I endorse all of the above. A friend sent me the following poem, which I think relates to the great people using this forum: I have a list of folks I know, all written in a book, And every year, at christmas time, I go and take a look. Hi Richard,
I'm actually moving back there to live in a few weeks after 15 years in Brisbane. It will be a steep learning curve but one that I cannot wait to start. I can keep you posted if you like about any trials, celebrations etc in the garden. With 40 acres and two spring fed dams I am sure I can adapt really quickly !!!

Hi Richard, just found your post. I live on the SE coast of Tassie and the climate varies a lot depending on the area of Tassie you live in. If you want more info. come over to Garden Express forum as I spend most of my time there - have a browse through that forum - There are a few members there from Tassie, you don't have to register if you don't want to.

Hi Richard I live about 40 minutes from Marrion in Hobart, I guess Hobart has a fairly mild climate, not too hot & not too cold, with pretty distinct seasons making it ideal to grow plants that need the seasons for their growing cycle.
