Is anyone growing the new red/purple cordylines that have popped up on the market in the last couple of years?

I've got one double potted in full sun that looks barely alive with a lot of dead leaves but my sister has a couple in shade that seem to stay looking nice - watered every day mind you.

Makes me wonder if they're not really suitable for FS?

a few of them are supposed to be suited to full sun but mostly cordylines like a filtered spot or part shade.if it says full sun on the tag then chances are they mean in places like vic where most of the tag info seems to be printed fo but in south aus I would go for a more filtered spot.

they shouldnt need watering every day and should do fine in sun. I have a red one in sun and wind and it's fine(so far)lol!

Thanks jean for your reply. No, no weed killer was used. But the culprit is evidently leafhopper and the syptoms of the corched ends of the leaves, curling stunted growth etc all fit. I can not take a picture since i chopped it way down and applied a pesticide recommended to me here since they had started to cause the same damage on other nearby plants. I hate using pesticides in general but took the (quick) lazy coward's way out this time since my other plants were getting it too... ...fortunately, i hardly ever haver serious bug probs and tend to let the seasons/other insects/ take care of it or use less poisonous (home) remedies. I do thank you. I believe you gave me some very sound advice regarding tagetes proplems last summer. all the best, dory

Most Cordylines, with the possible exception of 'Festival Grass', will eventually develop at least a thin trunk. Try feeding them a little extra nitrogen to encourage basal offshoots. Even if it can't be like an ornamental grass, you may be able to make it bushy enough to hide the trunks. Good luck! : )

I accidentally overwintered a small (10 in) Red Star Cordyline in a plunge pot outside. I have read they are hardy to zone 7. There was only about 3 inches of straw over it, the leaves died off but has come back and is now about 14 inches tall. Has anyone successfully overwintered a more mature plant - say, 2 to 3 feet tall? If so, did the leaves survive? How was it protected?

I have one cordyline ('Red Sensation', I think) in a subtropical bed and it is in good shape, although not growing much. Sometimes a plant will decline for no apparent reason, though you might want to check for soil moisture conditions at root level ('regular watering" means different things depending on how free-draining your soil is).

I had to move mine out of the sun they are now in filtered light and doing very well.
The most wonderful bright colours of pink/purple I wish I had planted them in that spot years ago..
Mine get watered once a week if they are lucky...

I was talking about the "cabbage tree" type. In summer in full sun they look dreadful around here - dead leaves on a stalk.
