Weather reporters annoy me intensely!

The report for Ballarat today says "risk of a shower developing later"
Wouldn't "Chance of a shower developing later" be far more appropriate wording? I'm certainly hoping FOR more rain. At this time of year it is so welcome in the garden and in the bush.

I agree, they seem to cater for some city folk who couldn't care less about the gardens, bush or where their water comes from. It annoys me when they go on about it being a 'beautiful sunny day' when the dams are nearly empty and water restrictions are in force.

Yes we have the same trouble here, they can never get it right, the temps are often wrong, and the rain forcast is never right so they just say chance of a Thunderstorm or chance of a Shower.... Now they dont even say that..... Everything is so dry here the green grass we used to have is grey and every day ( energy permitting ) we rake up a couple of huge barrowloads of leaves from the gum trees and put it elsewhere for mulch then the winds come and blow it back again so we rake it up again. The trees are so stressed that they are sapping the energy from my garden beds.....A little rain would go down well here even if only to green the grass up again...... Cheers...MM.

Peak the Tufa God---thank goodness you're back. After months of being forced to lie in bed and dream of the things I wanted to do, I attempted a two-layered grot and a casting of a hosta leaf. I did not do this directly on to the patio----remember...I'm the one whose new husband had to use a crowbar to get my first project off the cement. I'm also the (semi)fool who made bowls in the sand and allowed the tides of Puget Sound to set them. They are fine--probably because I did what Tufa God told me to do----used tons of rinse water after taking them off the beach. I've been trying to collect Dena's instructions on casting......Marly's general knowledge---all of which I have printed on scads of paper and stored in notebooks, which are now in a thousand different places. My wonderful husband's face looks pinched and worn as I stumble around and collect "shapes" for tufa production--and he just called from Home Depot, while I scrolled up this page to tell him which kind of tape to bring home. They're going to have to cut off my arms before I give up...but I feel much more secure now that Peak is back. By the way, Peak, would it not work to decorate the side of that gorgeous hunk with cement-soaked tulle? What might deter it from sticking?

"I've never heard of anyone using layering for this method but you must have been working in a pretty big scale to get that much heat from the chips." I was somewhat limited by the equipment I was using. Last summer I rented a Dingo to move mulch and make more mounds. While they are handy to move mulch, they are pretty slow digging, so I really didn't use near enough top soil (because it was slow to dig). However, I had built mounds the same way (layered mulch mounds) the summer before and gotten by with it with no problems. I constructed them by starting with a big mound of mulch (wood chips) on the bottom and then a couple alternating layers of soil and mulch after that. My thought was the layers of mulch would be thin enough they wouldn't compost, but I got the mulch too thick. Before I started using mulch mounds, I made mounds with just plain dirt and have never had any problems with 100% dirt. I agree I don't think mulch on the bottom with a generous amount of topsoil on top would have caused problems, as long as the roots were insulated from the mulch.

One thing I have noticed is that not all Teas are created equal. While Duchesse de Brabant (who is now in rose heaven) not only quit blooming but lost two thirds of its canes in the heat, Souvenir d'un Ami has beautiful full-sized buds and blooms and even another younger band of the same rose now has buds on it. It would make sense that roses with fuller, thicker petals would do better in the heat. But then how to explain Souvenir de Germain de St. Pierre (hope I got that right), a rather young band that has semidouble fragile blooms, has already bloomed once and has buds on it now? And this is a rose that gets only hot afternoon sun! I think I'm just going to stop trying to figure things out and enjoy the idiosyncracies of my roses and let them do their thing. It would be too boring if they were all alike anyway. Might as well have a square plot of hybrid teas and call it a garden. Eek! Ingrid

Co-irker! Love it haha. I have had a rough go with coworkers this past year-- mostly because for the past 15 yr, I've worked with two great bunches of people. All capable, responsible, interesting and smart. Now I am managing a merger of two companies and am having to deal with incompetence, politics and drama. This is not my strong suit.. in fact, my strong suit is rising above and not tolerating or succumbing to these poisons. We're working through it but boy is it draining. I just wish that people would pause and look at themselves and their behavior. Some will lose their jobs--and not because there isnt a place for them. It's because there isnt a place for their bad mojo. AND don't even get me started on the third-party vendors. I am up early to get the results of a test upload of a db from a tech center in preparation for a move next weekend. It should have taken less than an hour.. at midnight they sent an update saying that it would be another 70 hr. Really?! No one stopped to question it. No one said, "hmm something must be wrong here". What has happened to basic problem solving skills? Arggg. Sue, glad to hear DD is able to compete.. and really hope you aren't coming down with the same. Can't imagine anything worse when you are traveling. Crossing fingers and toes!

hey sparaxis come on now where is your aussie spirit hey lol lol?? they don't want it to rain on their cricket now do they i mean after all priorities have to count hey chuckle?............and mm the standard for bom is this they forecast or suggest some likley scenerios for say the s/e of qld (that is from maryborough south to the border and west to the range, big area hey) well their proof of accuracy is that if ".2 of a mm of rain falls on an official rain guage in the forecast time slot, they have gotten the forecast correct", great standard hey imagine if say car manufacturers had such a wide hit and miss factor!! great service standard if you can get it hey.............oh their big hang up or should i say problem they no longer look out of the window they don't do weather observation they do it all on simulator computer games with lots of free coffee..........len who works his own out and gets it right about the same % as bom but it doesn't cost the community a scent.
