if you had one wish!!!!!!!

hey cacti pals,

my question to you is, after dreaming about cacti and succulents all night every night, if you could have any species in the world , what would it be?

im sure you all have a list a mile lone, but i dare you to narrow it down to your favourite!!!

although they are common, my wish would be to have a huge garden fillen with echinocactus grusonii, really big ones, with babies reprducing everywhere,

That's a very difficult question as I like a lot of different species its hard to choose.
I would have to agree with you though the Golden Barrel is a superb cactus ,and is a favourite of mine. When I get my other computer up here from Adelaide I will post a pic of a Golden Barrel with lots of very large offsets.
I will have more of my "Garden visit" pics to show you.

Hi Guys -

Mine would have to be a room full of exotic cichlids :)... but they are fish LOL!. So I guess if I had to choose a favourite plant - I'd say Ceropegia ampliata - closely followed by Alluaudia procera :).

Don't jump to spend a bunch of money on something you don't need. Perlins probably are not as much of a factor as the diameter of your arch poles. Regardless, you should get a portable propane heater and plan to run it during heavy snow fall. Also a broom with an extension handle duct taped onto it. Don't plan to travel in the middle of a snowstorm. My biggest problem has always been the pressure that sliding snow puts on the plastic at the sides. If you feel you want extra perlins your cheapest bet would be to buy the 1.66" galvanized, swagged poles at Lowes and purchase cross-connectors from your nearest greenhouse supply center. The 10' poles will give you better weight distribution strength than the hammered end 4' connecting perlin pipes that come fron many greenhouse suppliers. I install extra perlins so I can position them for my tomato rows (drop string line from perlin to support plants).

My opinion on pot fillers. If the pot is too heavy to carry to the stove when the water is cold, I sure don't want to carry it to the sink when the water is boiling. For the effort/cost I don't need one. YMMV, though. I wish I had run my layout by gardenweb members for feedback. I wish I would have thought about a pull out cutting board. I haven't had one for about 30 years and had adapted. Would really like to have one again. The matt white Formica shows every speck of everything! Good, because I can wipe it off right away. Bad because if I haven't wiped it off right away everyone can see it. I live on a gravel road. I rarely use my a/c. Windows are open all the time. The FX stuff I originally planned might have been a better choice. Maybe next time. I do like the look of the white, though. I really hate my upper diagonals but I also hate the blind corner cabs. The more complicated pull down/out doesn't appeal to me. Problem still not solved. I don't like what I have but I don't like the other choices. I thought and thought about this and only came up with the three "I wishes", so all in all, my kitchen turned out pretty good. I am more than delighted to have the peninsula gone and every time I think about my new kitchen I suspect my face has the orgasm expression.

Bathroom, no doubt about it. I can handle having a single full bathroom (I got spoiled on two at my last house, awfully nice to have my own bathroom) but this one is too small for a separate tub and shower and there's nowhere to scavenge any more room. At my last house the master bathroom was only 8x8, very small compared to a lot of people on the bathroom forum, but I was able to finagle a lovely clawfoot tub and sensibly sized shower stall in there along with a nice sized console sink and of course the necessary WC, and it didn't seem the slightest bit crowded. This one is a 5x9.5 "bowling alley" and I'd really love to have just an extra few feet to have both a good soaking tub (which I really need for helping chronic pain, and not one of those ugly modern-looking "ergonomic" things either!) and a nice shower for DH.

AnnKH chimed in with the same 2 recommendations that I was going to suggest. Those easy-reach upper corners are much more efficient... as are lower cabinet drawers wherever possible. You really don't need to spend on built in organizers (like pegs). I wouldn't want any drawer to be locked into one function by their presence. Only exceptions, I think, are the access devices for lower corner cabinets (although I don't have one and don't really miss it - yet) and filler space pullouts. Symmetry is over-rated. Make the cabinets the most functional for your needs. Remember, almost never will anyone be looking at a cabinet run straight on, so symmetry or lack of it isn't noticed, except on the drawings. I would strongly encourage you to re-think the lighting. I absolutely love my new disk LED lights in the ceiling, such an improvement over the 2 smallish flush mounts that I had. It really makes the whole space more inviting and easier to work in. If your cabinet maker is making Euro-style (ie, frameless) cabinets for you, then adjustable shelves should be a given. I wouldn't want face framing and non adjustable shelves again, especially in a pantry. NO I wouldn't spend money to have a pantry "designed". Lastly, removing the short granite backsplash might be a problem, because there might be a large gap that tile can't cover, or noticeable damage to the granite from the adhesive (I'm not sure about that though). Be sure to talk to your granite fabricator about that, before you make your decision. I kind of like the short rim look myself, although the ones I've seen tend to be shorter and thinner as well.

Ah, a mesembs man Didge?! Do you have any pics? I tried to hunt one down online and found a pic of someone's seedlings (looking like single green jellybeans - mmm lime, my favourite!), and a pencil drawing that looked quite exotic, though I'm sure nothing as good as the real thing!
Me, my aspirations are a tad more humble.. have an endless fascination with the wibbly wobbly wavy Stenocactus; the Melocactus' cephalium of flowers; anything with perfectly even ribs - Astrophytum, Notocactus, etc.

But to choose a favourite of favourites is kinda hard and involves many mis-spent hours dribbling into my puter keyboard (3rd one this month :S ) whilst clicking through my wish list... though in the end I'll have to say and anything big and fat, preferably with red spines - eg Ferocactus stainesii with acanthodes and pringlii right behind. Incredible colour, fantastic looking plants all year round!!!!

An interesting array of "wishes" My wish would be a whole row of genuine Echeveria Subrigida. Heaven on earth. After 25years involvement I still dream about them every night and much "daydreaming" too.

Tough question but I would have to say one of the Native OZ Ipomoea's probably muelleri that gets a really big tuber. an anthouse plant would be nice as well.

How about E.stenoclada Dave? I've lost two of the cuttings already ,got rained on too early, but two are still ok.
Will keep trying.
