I am aware this thread is over a decade old but it pops up on google when you search for pawpaws in Savannah, and I just wanted to make sure everyone knows that YES, pawpaws are native to Savannah, it's just that dwarf/small-flower pawpaws (asimina parviflora) are more common this far south than common pawpaws (asimina triloba). I've found OVER thirty small-flower pawpaws on Roger Warlick Drive, along the walking path that leads to the recreation field, as on July 14th 2021. Many of the plants even have fruit, and there are more on the other side of the road as well! If you are also wandering here from google, looking for where to find pawpaws in Savannah, Georgia, check out iNaturalist.org, / iNaturalist, it's a world-wide database of plants and animals that people submit, so you can find any plants that people have found in your area! Even if none show up where you are, don't be dismayed! You might be the first person on the site to obverse them, like I was with the /literally more than thirty/ plants I found just in a few days of looking! The more people who add to the database, the more locations we'll be able to share! None of the pictures are showing up from the earlier posts, but iNaturalist is also an awesome way to learn how to identify the plants, because you can see hundreds of examples, taken at all different times of the year! Long post short: Pawpaws can 100% be found in Savannah, Georgia, it will just most likely be the smaller small-flower pawpaws instead of the larger common pawpaws. But if just one person has a pawpaw tree that animals are allowed to eat from, those seeds will spread and common pawpaws might become more common here too! Don't give up hope! Check out iNaturalist to see if there are any that have been seen near you, and even if there aren't, it doesn't mean there aren't any, it just means you can be the first to add them!

I would suggest now for the roo paws while there is still some heat in the ground. If you leave it until spring you will more than likely miss out on this year's flowers. Good idea to put native fertiliser in the bottom of the hole, cover with a layer of soil mix, then plant and mulch.

Edible Landscaping is a good choice. Potted pawpaws will be pretty small most likely, either that or shipping can be $$. I've ordered most of my pawpaws bareroot and those are generally best planted in early spring. Pawpaws are are sometimes tricky to establish and it is commonly recommended that you shade the plants for the first season (depending on how small/young the plants are. As I've planted bareroot ones, which are generally larger, I have not had to shade any of mine. You chose good varieties (I have Shananndoah among others) and I've heard good things about the others. I tried grafting Mango this year, but I don't think weather cooperated enough for it to take. You on will need to keep these plants well watered, and naturally they like areas with soil that retains water well. Do not amend the planting hole, your goal is to encourage the roots to grow out in search of sustenance, not spiral around and around in the best soil that you amended. DO mulch well (and if you have compost or other "amendments" put them down on the surface before you mulch. Don't make the mistake of planting too deeply. When all is done the first feeder roots should be just under the mulch or just below the compost surface. Keep the mulch a couple inches from the stem and go out a couple feet. if deer are a regular problem, you will definitely want to protect them. Although I find that for me possums and raccoons are a problem as well. Im jealous as I've never made it to the pawpaw festival. I'm close enough but as a teacher there is no way I can fit that into my schedule at that time of year. other good nurseries are www.nuttrees.com and www.burntridgenursery.com as well as rolling river nursery. Chills

I never received anything from him for a trade set up last year. I sent a box full of fruit tree cuttings and plants and he acknowledged he got them, even commented on plants and then....nothing. An email 8 months later with a partial excuse and still nothing. He gives trades a bad name.
