coprosma repens

I planted a "looking glass plant" about 9 months ago and I need some advice. It was in a small pot when I planted it and it's doing well, the only problem is it is mostly growing sideways and isnt gaining much height. It's now about 1 metre wide by about 15cms tall, I havent pruned it at all and have just left it to do its own thing, but does anyone have any advice on how to get it to grow upwards more? when I planted it, I noticed that the main upward stem had been cut out at the nursery, could this be the problem? or do they normally grow like this? the tag said it would get 3 metres tall but at this rate I'll be too old and senile to enjoy it! ;)

can anyone help?
