Mate, you should wait about another month or so, start around March thru May to start to sow. And even then, this weathers crazy.

Have you used the store bought brushed potatoes before? You really shouldnt plant store bought spud at all.....there are a lot of diseases that can come with the spud affecting the crop and many years to come. You should consider using certified seed potato. You can get them from a nursury or online as they are certified for no disease. A much better option if you want to grow for many years to come.

Mate,I am a huge Skeptic of scaremongering ploys from climate change mobs to religious nutters that believe in gods.
So,as to not planting store bought spuds,.,.,well,I reckon that this is put out as a scaremongering trick so that we are cajoled into buying expensive certified spuds.
If the spuds we eat can't be put in the ground because they might be diseased then that means we are all in danger of eating diseased spuds that we buy from a shop.
And yes in different locations than this one,around Aussie I have grown heaps of spuds that I have bought from the grocers and then planted.

wow you went into quiet a spiel there! but anyway to answer briefly, the certification process is to certify that those potato's grown will not contain blight or whatever, once you get blight then that part of the garden can as far as i understand no longer be used to grow potato's. so there is hardly a ploy or any other faction involved.

that does not mean that if we don't eat certified potato's we are eating diseased tubers, the shop bought 'taters all come from certified growing stock. we all use shop bought spuds that are chitting/budding to grow from but most of us realise the risk. up here seed potato's cost $2.50 or so a kilo, not terribly expensive, and certainly very economical way to get good potato's, that have been grown chemical free.

for me use both shop and certified, as there is not always enough shop bought ones that will grow(so unless they are already budding they may not grow at all, planting effort could be wasted), that is have not been chemically treated to not grow, but it is still very much economical even buying certified stock.
